Are your suppliers rushing in with their winter goods? The door keeps swinging open, armloads of wonderful stuff arrives every hour… but sales aren’t keeping pace?
Maybe it’s your fault.
Are you getting some bucks out of your suppliers while they’re in the shop?
Our Deja Vuesday post this week is definitely worth revisiting, in a season when you have a lot of traffic through your shop. This shopkeeper asked for advice on luring consignors into doing a little shopping, as long as they’re in the shop…
Or maybe it’s the fault of your messy counter.

When our consignors bring their items in…I always look up their balance and tell them right then if they have money coming. If they want their money I give them their payout slip to take to the register. I also ask them to look around for a few minutes to give me time to go through their things. We pay cash at the register and most times they end up spending most, all or more than their pay out amount.

Thanks Laurel,
I have seen shops that, because they have separate intake/consignment areas and sales counters, do this payout-slip thing, and think it’s WONDERFUL! I can just see a wonderful printed form for this now… something that looks like store bucks/spendable currency and motivates them to spend it rather than simply present it to the cashier to get the money. Is that what yours is like?

We had that same problem. So over a year ago, we started the ‘Drop Off Discount’. If they shop the same day they drop off items, they get a 10% discount on their total purchase. ‘Our thank you for bringing us such wonderful stuff!’. Well it worked! Most of them would say, ‘Ok, well I’ll just look around a quick moment before I leave.’ Almost every time they would find some things they just couldn’t live with out!
Now, we get a kick out of it! Many of the ones who walked in, walked out, and NEVER bought a thing are the ones who say, ‘Oh don’t forget my discount. I dropped off today.’ as they’re checking out!
