The Most Valuable FREE Thing You’ll Ever Get

May 16, 2008 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Word of Mouth

What could be the most valuable free thing your consignment or resale business will ever get? Word-of-mouth. That unpaid, unsolicited recommendation from a satisfied, nay delighted, customer to a potential customer.

This info actually came to ME via word-of-mouth. Well, it was in an email (nothing says word-of-mouth must be actual speech!) , but it was a genuine woman-to-woman “hey, this is cool and I think you’ll be interested” comment. The initiator of the word-of-mouth has nothing to gain from her recommendation. She’s just being friendly…and the thing/shop/service/book/movie stood out in her experience enough that she was motivated to spread the word.

I’m tickled that The Soccer Mom Myth authors Michele Miller and Holly Buchanan have selected, as one of their 5 tips for understanding word of mouth and women, a point I continually repeat:

Give her the personal touch. It does not have to be fancy or extravagant (though that’s always appreciated). A personal thank you note mailed the old-fashioned way may be enough to get her attention and touch her heart. Remember her kids’ names…

Here’s to the most valuable, cheapest, and downright SIMPLEST way to build your business! And thanks to Molly in Roswell NM for sharing this resource with Too Good to be Threw. Now, what can you do today…and every day…to so please and delight your clientele that they simply can’t resist talking about your business?
