Where did that hour go?

March 14, 2010 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

I keep a red clown nose in the glove compartment. So I wake up this morning and remember that I lost an hour last night. Then DuH spends (I swear) 35 minutes setting the clocks forward. And that doesn’t count the PolkaDot PT’s clock or the one in his ancient pickup (“I LOVE this truck” he says EVERY time he comes home from a trip, even just to the hardware store.)

It’s not like I don’t waste at least an hour a day. Sometimes it’s fun (like a coffee at a sidewalk cafe or a walk on Crescent Beach) and sometimes it’s not (sitting in Spring Break and Snowbird traffic on Tamiami Trail.)

You know what “they” say:

The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

(Quote attributed to Bertrand Russell or John Lennon depending on who you ask.)

And sometimes it’s not really wasted time, it’s just an hour doing something that really didn’t particularly need doing, to avoid doing that which did need doing. (Wow, that’s a sentence and a half, isn’t it?)

My favorite resale shopkeeper time wasters:

  • Colorizing the costume jewelry (to go along with the colorized clothing racks. It’s aMAZing how much better the $4 earrings and $5 beads look.)
  • Rumpling a bit of fabric under the merchandise in the home decor area (it pulls it together so nicely. Try bright yellow under all the blue-and-white bric-a-brac.)
  • Replacing all the motivational signage on the 2- and 4-ways to something new and fresh.

What type of time do you enjoy wasting?

I enjoy pricing jewelrey, just writing all those little tags with numbers on them. It’s also the only time I get to just sit!

I like changing the mannequins and making displays. It’s my reward to myself at the end of the day. It’s not really a waste of time, but it feels like child’s play.

Facebook, feeding my fish every night and selling them for extra points, lol. Very wasted but relaxing.

But if you mean at the shop, well, I like wasting time going through and organizing the toys over and over again all day long to make them look appealing to the next shopper after her kids took 20 off the shelf to play with. I also like to waste time organizing my hangers. Someday I will come up with a better system so that does not need done several times a day.
