Deja Vuesday: What makes a great promotion? »

It’s not too early to plan your holiday promotion.

September 13, 2010 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Let it snow... somewhere else!

This is a Florida snowman. Our fav holiday carol? "Let it Snow"..."somewhere ELSE!"

Are you a part of a local resale, consignment, thrift shop marketing group? The power of many can be awesome… especially when you’re planning to go up against the holiday shopping advertising and promotion of those”real” stores! But even if you don’t have a local group, this idea’s a winner.

It’s time to choose and develop a theme which will motivate shoppers to explore your business. Here’s a theme that works for resale associations, local merchants’ groups…even your store by itself.

“Snow Secret: Shop Local for Holiday Happiness”

Pronounced ‘s no secret of course!

It’s a catchy name, and plays on community acceptance of resale. Toss in the appeal of shopping local and happiness...all in seven little words. How can we beat that?

Easy-peasy windows and advertising clipart: Snowpeople and snow theme windows for all participants. Bonus: Using a non-religios theme allows all your potential shoppers to feel comfortable.

Build your holiday business, even if you ARE resale! And promotional events: sno-cones in the ‘hood on the Saturday before Christmas. Gift your purchasers with pretty snowflake ornaments. Snowball “fights” where shoppers are challenged to collect the most “snowballs” from all participating shops on Thanksgiving weekend. How-to: A white Styrofoam ball with shop name given to all visitors that weekend: the collectors of one from each participating shop presents them to the last shop on their personal tour and wins a chance for a truly magnificent gift certificate drawing. (The smart shop in the group— that would be you natch— might even provide a pretty shop-name-emblazoned snow-ball bag in which the participants can gather their balls.) If your shop is using this theme alone, have “dated” snowballs…one a week for the holiday season, and eligibility for the drawing involves collecting all 5 shopping weeks’ worth.

Every type of shop has a ready-made hook on which to hang their broadcast email subject lines, their tweets, their ad and flier headlines:

  • Long gift list? ‘Sno problem when you know the Snow Secret of Shopping Local at MyShop.
  • Need holiday buffet supplies? ‘Sno problem when you know the eco-secret oft MyShop.
  • Need a glamourous party outfit? Snow Secret about the selection  & value at MyShop.
  • Come in out of the cold: Holiday shopping’s ‘sno secret at MyShop!

And the best part of using a snow theme decor? It can be left up into February if need be!
