Random Acts of Kindness: How they fit into your consignment or resale shop

February 28, 2011 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

When was your last Random Act of Kindness?

Gi ahead: extend your hand in a Random Act of KindnessDid you offer the free use of a punch bowl to a charity who only needed it for one evening… buying it from your consignor, then putting it in the store account for sale when it was returned?

Did you loan an evening wrap to the teen who was going to a formal? Match up a renter with a landlord? Donate an incredible pair of earrings to a customer, getting from her the promise to pass them on to someone who’ll love them as much as you do. And give them our best wishes.

How do Random Acts of Kindness (hereafter RAC) help your business?

  • They show that you are a business with soul. No one has ever said the mall stores have soul. Who wouldn’t rather shop in a store with good vibes?
  • They increase the quality of life in the community which allows you to earn a living. A happy community is one that is a pleasure to be a part of.
  • They build the “Joy Factor” of your town. Every town needs more joy. When people are happier and more relaxed, they are a joy to be around. When your consignment or BOR shop is a joyful place, so are your customers.
  • They make you feel better about being, well, a mensch. Mensch-hood is a quality to be much desired in this world. Once you have shown your mensch-hood, life becomes easier, happier, smoother.

And goodness knows, RAC help your community, your clientele…and your soul.

Share with us, some RAC that you found the opportunity to do, in the midst of a ho-hum everyday.

My teenaged daughter enjoys fixing jewelry (chains and earrings) and was able to modify a necklace for a customer. I sold a chain and was able to add a satisfied customer’s picture to our facebook page!
I also offered to loan an easel out for a wedding….I told the customer she just needed to come in a few times before September to remind me. RAC equals a few customer visits.
Working with a friend to advertise a local food pantry. She has art to auction and I have free wall space. RAC will get us a spot in the newspaper and people walking in to my store.

Perfect examples of Random Acts of Kindness! Happy customers, more attention focused on your business, and great press… priceless πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing these examples with us.

Have loaned displays to several customers decorating for weddings. I guess most businesses must rent those items, because they’ve all been amazed we would just loan them…

    * loaned a chair to a community theater for their production of Alice in Wonderland – it was the queen’s throne!

    * advertised in the local garden club’s brochure – less advertising and more donation, really. But good because the garden club bunch are fantastic consignors πŸ™‚

    * donated to the local elementary’s family night. They will mention us, naturally.

    * donated and will continue to donate unsellables to a local charity that supports families starting over.

    Kate,

Totally agree! “It’s more blessed to give than to receive.” [Bible] But you know what? The giver receives so much in return if their motive is right!
