Logos I rejected (and why)

April 25, 2011 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Okay, I showed you some logos that I liked so much I kept them in my reference file. Now, let’s take a look at choosing a logo.

Some logos I rejected, and why:

A logo from scratch: when I was developing my consumer-friendly site about consignment, resale, and thrift shopping, I had the name and the tag line, but no clear idea about the image I wanted to project. I emailed my favorite logo designer (who, alas, is no longer in business), explained what the site would do and to whom it was aimed, and she replied with these (sorry, low-quality) graphics. Let’s take a look.

howtoconsign.com rejected logo

This was a suggestion I rejected. The script font was too feminine, and the mother and child certainly didn't speak to the universal mission of HTC. Why the designer even submitted this was a mystery to me.

What, consignment is in the closet? This graphic simply didn't portray what my site would be about... and the mix of font faces in "HowToConsign" made no sense to me: it seems to read "HowTo" and then "Consign", instead of one entity.

The accepted logo of HowToConsign.com, Turning your Cluttered Closets into Cash

I'd sent the sketch of my idea for altering the universally-recognized recycle symbol into my tag line of ReSell... RePlace... Rejoice! and asked the artists to come up with a perky-yet-ecological color scheme. I loved this version, and have been using it ever since!

Next, a redesign

My Too Good to be Threw logo was in need of an updating. Here’s some I rejected:

Like the earth-friendly blue and green and the recycle symbol, but the childish font? What does THAT say? Certainly not a professional educational resource for one's business.

TGtbT, The Premiere Site for Professional Resalers

Again... does the kooky font really emphasize TGtbT as The Premiere Site for Professional Resalers? Plus the recycle symbol here is so skimpy, it appears I am using "to" instead of "too" and you know how I hate grammar mistakes!

A little tweaking from the artist, a little more from a web designer, and here's the final product. Not EXACTLY what I trult wanted, but until I gain the Photoshop skills to play around a little on my own, this'll do!

TGtbT.com 's "interior" logo

I also requested an "interior" logo: one I could use when presenting information to those who are aware of the full Too Good to be Threw name... for example, on interior web pages, as a brand within my Products for the Professional Resaler.

What will be TGtbT's Facebook splash page

I also made sure I had the font installed on my machine, so I could play with it. This graphic will be, as soon as I find a moment, the splash page for the TGtbT Facebook page... or anywhere else I want to make a splash!

Watch another design process:

While I didn’t use a “contest” web site, where designers vie for your job, Kate of HollyGoLightly did. Follow her thoughts through the process on Designer’s Outpost, then bop over to her web site to see which she’s using!
