Don’t forget your most-neglected potential customers

January 9, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Just a reminder: Martin Luther King Day is Monday Jan 16. Seize the shoppertunity!Invite potential customers to visit your consignment, resale or thrift shop!

Monday holidays can be big traffic days in your shop, if

you let your site viewers, blog readers, Facebook and Twitter audiences know you’re open. Since many office, educational institution, and government workers get the day off, invite them in. Could be they’ve heard the buzz about your shop and are curious and excited, but they can’t make it in because they’re always working when you’re open. Remind them that their day off is a great day to explore your shop.

Just imagine all of those 9 to 5ers who would LOVE to “discover your shop” on MLK Day!

I have always been stumped that several resale stores in my area are closed on Mondays, which is typically a day off for most hair salon owners (and customers) – prime customers. Does THAT make any sense?

Awesome Grand Opening Day!! What a great idea to open on MLK day!! Lots of SHOPPERS!! including school aged girls and bankers, and government workers!! My Sister’s Closet Resale Shop had a fantastic 1st day. The weather was sort of dreary, damp, and windy. But what a better way to up your spirits than some Retail Therapy, and what a better way to stay dry, inside a resale shop, and windy?? way to sell boots, sweaters, and scarves, and of course the wind was great for my plastic penant flags I bought at dollar tree . they just waved in the wind perfectly. Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

Congrats, we can all imagine how excited you are! How many people’s contact info… mailing address/ email address… did you get, and how many thank-you notes will you be writing this weekend? Hope it’s dozens and dozens!

We are open regular hours on almost every “holiday”. Since we are near a state capital, these are BIG shopping days. MLK day is also a big receiving day, since a lot of 9 to 5ers have the time to bring their items in so we staff that counter well. We also offer free coffee and cookies on the holiday since it is cold this time of year. It tends to get them to stay longer.

speaking of hours… What is everyones hours? Our town is small and consistantly busy during the week and on Saturdays, so it is kinda hard for me to decide. any suggestions? at first gonna be open a lot due to the fact still working on the other part of the building where my Moms real estate office will be.

Best wishes, My Sister’s, on your opening. I think that’s a fine day to soft-open, and an opportunity to “capture”, perhaps, some potential supporters who may find, in the future, that it’s hard to shop with you, if they discover that your hours of business don’t work with their hours available to shop. Be sure to collect contact info, and use it to tempt these wannabe shoppers with opportunities to become regulars. Watching WHEN people shop in your marketplace is vitally important, so start a hourly log: how many shoppers come in, how much income is generated. You’ll soon, within a month or two, see patterns and at that point, you may decide to make tweaks to your hours.
