My hobbies are watercolor, resale shopping… and collecting what I like to call “Great ways to say things” for use by consignment, resale, and thrift shops. Here’s one of my favorites:
I don’t need to remind you, do I, about inspiration vs. plagiarism. I’m sure Trader Joe’s would be flattered to have inspired you to find your own way to say something similar about your shop and its pricing structures.Do you have weekly specials or sales on your products?
“Sale” is a four-letter word to us. We have low prices, every day. No coupons, no membership cards, no discounts. You won’t find any glitzy promotions or couponing wars at our stores. If it makes you feel any better, think of it as all our items are on sale, day in and day out. — from Trader Joe’s website

Two of our competitors never had a sale, frequent buyer card, discounts or anything close to marketing their stores! They thought they knew what their customers wanted. They’re both out of business and I’m still here, have been for 13 years! The Trader Joe idea may work in the grocery business but not in the apparel business. When I revised my entire approach to marketing about three years ago my sales and profits improved dramatically. We now have frequent “sales”, a savvy shopper card, daily “discounts”, Facebook specials, email specials and print media coupons. Our customers love it and so do are share holders ( LOL…my husband and I)! Today’s consumers are always looking for a “deal” and when they find one in a consignment store it is often unexpected. In other words, we surprise and please our customers by offering them discounts and other savings off our regular low prices. When you combine this type of marketing with stellar customer service you have a winning combination!
Laurie, congratulations on 13 years of profitable business! Your point about consumers always looking for a deal is very interesting. Surprising and pleasing shoppers is a great idea.
