You can learn a lot in the dairy case: the evolution of Pillsbury crescent rolls

November 14, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

What can a consignment, resale or thrift shopkeeper learn from a mega-corp like Pillsbury?Pillsbury crescent rolls: Original, Big & Flaky, Reduced Fat, Garlic Butter…. the mega-corp Pillsbury has built and built on their “original model” and now, they even have unperforated crescent rolls, for all those consumer-developed recipes that start with “Pinch the lines closed.”

They call this product “Recipe Creations.”

Besides a brilliant name, what does this unassuming roll of raw dough, stashed in the dairy case of groceries everywhere, teach us a consignment, resale and thrift shopkeepers?

Recipe Creations fulfills a need that’s developed since the product was introduced and gives

more consumers a reason to buy, to buy more often,  and to buy MORE! (Sound familiar? It should.)

So how can you use this concept in your shop, in your town, in your marketplace?

What do folks who are already your customer, or folks who fit the profile of your ideal customer, need or want… that you were not originally thinking of when you set out your business plan? Closet organizing? Pick-up? In other words…

What segment of the marketplace are you missing?

Maybe you’d like to get high-end goods in, from people who wouldn’t be bothered to make a trip to see you.  From a corporate press release:

STA [Second Time Around] has also recently partnered with Stacy London’s styling agency, Style for Hire, to offer an in-home consignment concierge service for premium high-end items. Clients with at least 50 premium high-end designer pieces to consign can request an STA or Style for Hire stylist to travel to the client’s home to take the consignment to an STA location.

Or maybe you’d like to grab a bigger part of the resale market in your area, doing something like this? Or by taking your show on the road to reach more customers (and funk up your branding)?

How about getting your customers shopping more often: Just Between Friends, the franchise seasonal children’s sale, is branching out into a Toy Sale for the holidays, marketing it both as a way to save money and a way to make money. Go take a look.

Maybe you simply want to fulfill more of current clients’ needs, as in this shop’s Style Sleuth Saturday!

Sell more, more often, to more customers. That's a good lesson to learn.Have something in your closet that’s hard to match? Longing for your own stylist? We’ll help you find the clues to cure your wardrobe blues! Shop this Saturday at both locations where our very own Style Sleuths will be on hand to solve your style mysteries.

Sell more, more often, to more customers. That’s a good lesson to learn.
