Facebook can make your face red. Or your customers’.

January 30, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Sometimes a shopkeeper has to think before "speaking" on FacebookSome consignment, thrift, and resale shop owners need to postpone their postings on Facebook…. until they get more common sense. Some actual posts by actual shopkeepers:

I’m so sick of people stealing from my store they think its a joke and I don’t know but its ok><<<<what comes around goes around!! WHORES!!!

Then there’s the we’re-too-good-for-you types of posts like  All buttons must be buttoned, zipped and snaps snapped. It takes too much time for us to do all that.

And the “insider lingo” which can be (will be!) misinterpreted:  Loads of expired items have had their prices slashed 50 – 70%. To which we can only imagine the public thinking… expired? Doesn’t that mean dead? Or at least unfit for human consumption? Another: We are putting out very cute baby girl clothes What, are they on fire?

And the poor spelling/ grammar/ incorrect word choices that do your business no favors: We will be excepting spring next week.

And this one, which isn’t as OMG, but geez Louise, couldn’t you have said it in a way that was flattering rather than condescending? If there are any red hat ladies listening we are over run with red and purple hats, boas, & accessories

More on how to phrase, or how not to say, things to your potential clientele:

  • OMG Turning suppliers off
  • Great way to say…
  • And some tweets, just waiting for you to re-tweet to your clientele. (Retweet, please, do not make like it’s your thought. HowToConsign getting the exposure of your retweeting is good for every shop in the resale business, so share, don’t steal. Thank you.)

[…] updates, any written words actually, come across differently than the spoken word. Like these oops-a-daisies by real shops on […]

OMG … I post to Facebook all the time … and, believe it or not, I have a very good command of the English language. It really makes me irritated when I make a mistake, but I normally catch it pretty quick and I delete it or edit it and make fun of myself for making a spelling error! As for the rude comments that people leave – do people not realize that people will spread hate faster than they spread love? This is so true in the business world! I don’t like it when people steal from me either, but I just keep my eye on them very closely whenever they come in the next time. As for the rest of it … I had my daughter post something to Facebook once and I vowed to never do it again. Not only does no one sound like me when they try to update like me, they sure do not spell like me LOL!

Oh, and just as an aside – we do a lot of Facebook posts and CraigsList advertisements. We even spent good money on a monthly spot in a local newspaper, but really didn’t get anyone in from that avenue. We now spend the same amount of money each month on a weekly spot in a local CoffeeNews paper and I am eager to find out how well that does for us. But the best advertisement this week has been our sign at the corner of our shopping center where we are … we finally were able to afford to buy a sign and get it up and in place so customers can see us when they drive by. So far, since it was installed on Saturday, we have received at least one or two new customers each day, just because they were driving by and saw our sign. The old adage “It takes money to make money” is very true, but it doesn’t take a lot of money if you do it right!

Just this morning I felt like posting “Yay, another day, another day in the negative. I’d rather go back to bed.”

So I’ll post it here instead and get it off my chest. Thanks for the forum : )

Wow, I’m sure the people writing these didn’t realize how bad these were. Thanks for reminding me to write, and re-read!

Exactly! These consignment, resale, or thrift shopkeepers didn’t MEAN what they said… or at least, they didn’t mean for their potential clients to see/ “hear”/ read what they said! Now, I’m as guilty as the next businessperson sometimes in not truly thinking about how I “come across”… but I’ve posted these horrors as a way to suggest that, perhaps, posting on Facebook is not as “easy” as it seems. Free DOESN’T mean effective or productive or even helpful… it can sometimes mean, because the barrier to entry is so low as to be non-existent, that a shopkeeper can totally shoot herself in the … wallet.
