Enter the Armoire

March 6, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

I just loved this photo I pinned today, and the visions of display windows it started in my over-heated consignment/ resale brain, so I have to expand on the idea!

Here’s the pin that started it all. I can just see it, as I said,

If you have window WALLS in your consignment or resale shop, instead of display windows, consider this armoire turned “showcase.” Set it a body-width away, parallel to your window, work out some lighting for it (drop cans or chandelier!), and you have a display, a backdrop, and a word-of-mouth-worthy piece all in one!

I’m envisioning that “tree” with a few cup hooks on the branches, to hang an outfit and/or accessories as needed. And another “tree” painted on the back of the piece facing inward, with a two-way of similar merchandise stashed there, so customers can find a similar look, in their size or colors, to your window display. Depending on the height of your piece, bright handbags could rest atop. Or recycle some crib railings and stash throw pillows there.

Then I ran across this armoire photo, and it got me thinking about those doors… which could become cork-tiled display areas, chalk-board signage area, or even, simply, your shop’s name and tag line. As a bonus idea for my over-heated brain, the color scheme of this armoire to me is close to perfect. A little country, a little rock-n-roll… not too adult, not too kiddie, not too feminine.

Which got me thinking about… doors and what if they’re too pretty to open? Use them as is (but be sure to allow for customers who will insist on opening them themselves)… or even, if the glass is missing, using the remaining door frame as a frame for your displays. Lighting is crucial, so plan (and budget) ahead for this!
