You don’t get if you don’t ask!

September 27, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Turning stuff into cash using your consignment, resale, or thrift storeA consignment shopkeeper I met years ago recently sent out a broadcast email with this message:

The holiday season will be here before we know it. There’s no better time to bring in your designer handbags you no longer carry and turn them into holiday shopping cash!

See how smart she is? She knows it’s way too early to promote shopping resale for the holidays… but she reminds folks that they can earn holiday cash using her shop. After all, incoming has to happen before the register rings, right?

And she asks them to do something specific… her CTA, call-to-action.

And she asks for what will link the first thought, I can get money to what will bring the best results. Designer handbags.

And she asks for them now… so the best goods don’t come in too close to the holidays to sell well.

How could you tailor this idea to your consignment, resale, or thrift shop? Think about:

What are your followers concerned about right now? (In Janet’s case, it’s how am I going to pay for holiday fun?) Remember, they’re thinking about themselves and their families, not you!

What’s your Call to Action? (She says bring them in) She doesn’t complicate her message with rules and hours and anything that would halt the connection between money and consigning.

What will help your reader turn consigning (selling, donating) into the desired result (money, or in the case of thrifts, helping the shop’s mission)? In Janet’s case, designer handbags.

And the final push? Time pressure Bring them in now. Because she wants her followers to look up from the screen and into their closets now, not tomorrow, not December 1.

Try writing such a short, compelling message for your business. Then share it, and your reasoning, below.
