Santa Pumpkin wants to say: Holidays in Resale are great!

Who loves a party? We do!

What gets us in a festive mood?

Decorations, doo-dads, dressing for holidays… the whole, real-life experience of being immersed in the holiday spirit. New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, Easter, everyone’s birthday and anniversary and bridal showers and oh my!

Just thinking about a celebration, holiday, party, makes us smile.

And you don’t get that joy shopping at Amazon or any of those online consignment vendors…

So let’s USE the advantage

A follower asked me, recently, when she should start planning her seasonal promotional events.

I told her ASAP.

The more lead time, the better. Why?

  • You can try out your handouts, social media posts, etc, on many friends. Do they get what you’re saying?
  • Do they get excited about it? Does it appeal to your target market?
  • And are those friends proofreading for you too?
  • You can source supplies, decorations, props, even catering for the most advantageous deals.

And best of all: you can DEVELOP unexpected events if you always keep an eye open for opportunities that come your way.

Here’s an example: Stillgoode Consignments in Spring TX is currently running an online estate auction.

So what? Well, they have almost 100 angel figurines of all sorts up for grabs. Now, if you happen to be in Houston, and happen to be free on this coming Saturday to pick them up, you could have a variety of little angels for a bargain price.

So what? Well, with these in hand, you could plan an event you hadn’t really planned for, for Thanksgiving through Christmas:
“Donate a minimum of $10 to [name your charity} and choose your own personal angel... because you ARE one!” or maybe
“Every purchase over $100 gets a free angel!” or maybe
“Buy $50 or more at MyShop, pick an angel, turn it upside down, and discover your discount: 5, 10, even 15% off your purchase!”*

Is this a fun, word-of-mouth-worthy event? Perfect for media attention too? And selfies for social media? You even have built-in refreshment suggestions: angel food cake, ambrosia punch. And if you run this event for a period of time, you’ll even, I am sure, get customers donating additional angel figurines to the Host of Angels.

Wow, did you click on today’s post simply BECAUSE of the title? Hmm, lesson learned?

Yup, December 26. In the spirit of naming days in regard to their seasonal consumerism (Black Friday?  Cyber Monday?), December 26 should be The Day of Disappointment.

I recently opened a broadcast email from a consignment shop owner which offered a deal. She wrote:

“buy a $100.00 Gift Card for $90.00!”

Now, think about this. A holiday gift-giver has decided that she’ll purchase a $100 gift certificate for her mother, daughter, employee or friend. You tell her she can have it, and KEEP $10.

As opposed to an offer like

“buy a $100.00 Gift Card & we’ll give you $10.00 in MyStore Bucks for yourself!”

Now what’s the difference in these two offers?

Here’s an email subject line that caught my eye today:

“Gorgeous Gifts and Goodies Under $350!”

Now, wouldn’t that be a great opportunity for YOU to get your email list folks thinking about shopping in your shop for the holidays? You could link to a gallery of product photos... a collage… a Facebook album or Instagram or Pinterest or blog entry.

Or for the time-pressed, just put the pix in your email… then (of course) link the email to your social media.

Choose a price point that would be reasonable for your clientele… not too high, not too low. You want to show value, not how cheap they could be, ’cause holiday gift-giving is all about the delight, not the savings.

Then, closer to December 25? Do a repeat with “stocking stuffers” for a lower price point. If your clientele is anything like me, around that time I’m always worried that I don’t “have enough”!
