Oh say can you see…an opportunity to get press coverage?

May 26, 2008 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Long may it waveLord & Taylor has an alert press agent. How do I know? This article. Go read, then come back.

A Star-Spangled Banner Yet Waves at Lord & Taylor

Oh good, you’re back. Is that not the PERFECT press release to send to their “local” paper ( just happens to be The New York Times!) for Memorial Day? Its odds of being used by the editorial staff are much higher on Memorial Day than, say, July 18 or March 3.

There’s a lesson for us consignment, thrift, and resale stores here, we of the DIY public relations: Time your stories to match a topic the editors will think their readers will be interested in.

BTW? Your next window of opportunity involving patriotism and/or the flag? Flag Day is June 14. And since that’s a holiday that gets scant notice, maybe YOUR odds are even better than Lord & Taylor’s. But probably your cover letter should mention Flag Day. Editors are not all-knowing.

Tomorrow we’ll discuss another educational freebie from this same article. Actually, TWO really good lessons (and probably more, depending on how much of a Chatty Kathy I am tomorrow.) Oh yeh, and if I forget to talk about Labor Day, remind me willya?
