When there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them

June 18, 2008 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

(On the Too Good to be Threw discussion board for professional resale shopkeepers, consignment shop owners, and thrift managers, one participant mentioned that the “authorities” are insisting she pay property tax on goods she does not own: that are not hers.) This quote is a good thing to keep in mind, when some bureaucrat is holding a “gun” (jail, penalty, prison, fine, ruination) to your head.

There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws. Ayn Rand

Thanks Kate! – I just love to read your writing. Ayn Rand is the best. People, if you’ve never read this book you should. It’s a hefty thing but very hard to put down!
