Recycling store fixtures in resale & consignment shops

December 10, 2009 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Tracy asked:

This morning an idea popped into my head about integrating recycled items into the decor as well as functional pieces. I bought a magazine the other day that showed a pair of old bi-fold doors that had been painted and turned into shelving. Can you think of any other fun and funky things to use that would be functional? (and cheap!)

Kate replies: Here’s some ideas I’ve collected:

The old bench as a 2nd level to a display table, and the old TV armoire…

More ideas, from some friends in the consignment biz, resalers, even “real” stores.

Of course, old picrture frames become frames for displays

Little Specialty Shop used a blazer to display pins; I used a denim jacket the same way.

Matchstick blinds hold carded jewelry (also a perfect solution for hanging artwork: Stick your nails right through over and over…the blind hides the holes!

Crstal's Closet even recycled a hanger (I ADORE this!)

The ultimate in recycling: getting your 'cycle a new storage spot

How about recycling your garage space, by storing the ‘cycle in your shop window all winter? I did the same for my fake Christmas tree…made a kids’ window tree fort (“No girlz allowd”) all summer long.

The ultimate in recycling: string, clothes pins, brown paper bag at Saipua

Thanks to YoYoWear in California, Sweetpeas in Ontario, Saipua in Brooklyn, Options in Massachusetts, Little Specialty Shop in Ontario, Odd Twin in Brooklyn, and a couple of folks I’ve forgotten…

Thanks, Punkystyle, good to know! You might want to check out Pinterest, too, for missing attributions. It’s a great photo of the idea!

Our check out counter was made by my creative husband with an old sink vanity top (computer sits over the sink hole) and the base is made of various old salvaged windows.
Dressing rooms were built with old wooden doors………super col and very eco friendly!
