Impt reading for resale & consignment shop ownersThis week’s free Giveaway is a genuine gently-used copy of a book I’m betting you’ll find fascinating, The Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy. My most memorable was a little pink set I wore when I was about 19 or 20 (back in the late 80’s). It was a hot pink skirt with matching top, it was respectable as the skirt hit right above the knee and the shirt was nothing special or revealing…but it had a cute little bow at the bottom of the skirt in the back and a bow on the shirt. I wore it to work a lot as it was cute and comfy…but the funniest part is when I ran into one of my old coworkers 10 years later (he was 16 at the time we worked together) he told me how he remembered that pink outfit and the bow and told me how much he liked that outfit on me! Ha ha ha, I couldn’t believe a guy would remember something like that! I had even forgotten about that outfit until he brought it up!

Ok, I am shamed into adding mine. Which is also directly connected to my most embarassing moment.

So here goes… Just about 13 years ago I was looking to get out of Restaurant Management and a friend suggested applying to a very well known pharmacy chain as a Store Manager. Filled out the app, got called in for an in person interview with the H.R. Manager etc..

Dressed for success, I wore heels, pantyhose, white short sleeve blouse under a 3/4 length vest type button up dress (dark green) I will never forget it!!!

Interview process went great, very long but great, what I did not realize as I went to stand up to shake his hand is that I kept my legs crossed in the same position for waaaayyy too long and my foot fell asleep. Well…. I go to stand and at the same time do not feel that my foot which is asleep in a heel mind you… I fall into the gentleman’s lap (literally) at which time all but 2 of the buttons on my dress pop open. I can only imagine what that man thought!!

NO, I am not kidding you… I was mortified, and I am not the type that embarasses easy, I fix my dress, apologize and hobble like the elephant man down the hallway because my foot is still asleep.

Moral of the story… If you really, really want the job. Wear a button down dress. I would offer you mine but I burnt it once I got home.

But yes, I did get the job. And for any of you that have ever heard of a similar story along these lines, yes, it really happened, and yes it was me.

I know this story is still circulating through CVS still to this day.

There, Kate that is my favorite outfit of ALL TIME.

Growing up the oldest of 6, there were never hand me downs for me. My mom, being an amazing seamstress, tested all of her sewing prowess on moi. I had several favorites. One spring, she made me a dress that was a copy of a dress I saw in Seventeen magazine. It was a lovely white long sleeve empire with a rolled scoop collar. The fabric was organdy (or something like that) and it had a beautiful satin ribbon with tiny pink rosettes. I wore it to my 8th grade graduation dance and took first place in the twist contest!

Mom had a penchant for costumes and being on the Buena Park Drill team gave her a perfect opportunity to make my drill team outfit that was a fringed dark denim skirt and matching western vest with red cumber bun. To top it off, we had white cowboy boots and white cowboy hats. I wore it in the July 4th parade and along with the rest of the team sweltered in 107 degree heat sporting our “hot” outfits. A great memory.

Mine was a dark green polyester 2pc outfit that my mother made for me when I was around 7 yrs old 😉 Not sure why it was my favorite maybe because it was comfy?? anyway thats the one 😉

I actually have two favorites. The first being the most memorable, which was sort of my first “grown-up” outfit, a two-pc blue skirt and jacket set from a clothing party line, which I think was called Beeline. I was about 18 and felt so grown-up with that set. It was very much a business suit.
My very favorite though has to be a Ralph Lauren men’s XXL sweatshirt, which was huge on me, so thin from being about 8 years old, but so super comfy. Loved that sweatshirt.

My favorite piece of clothing ever was a pair of Jag jeans I got when I was in high school at a yard sale for $1! No kidding! I wore them until they disintegrated. It began my obsession with resale that has lasted over 20 years since!

It just occurred to me I didn’t tell you mine!

It was a satinette (that’s fake satin to you non-vintage mavens) dress with a cowl neck, dropped waist, and tiny black and white flecked stars all over it. It was light orange (not peach, not blush, literally light orange). I was 6 or 7. What I loved best was the label in the neck: Cinderella.

I got in BIG trouble for rough-housing on the lawn with my best friend Terry while wearing no underpants with this dress. That’s Terry as in Terrence, not Teresa.

My favorite outfit of all time you ask …. that’s a hard one (and my excuse for waiting so long to post)…. one favorite article I recall is one of sentimental value — a blue printed cape (soft knit) that I remember my mother wearing at all the sports events as us 3 kids grew up… it was passed down to me a few years ago and I loved it and wore it all seasons. We lost our home & possessions 2 years ago, but I now have a new fondness of all capes.
