Here’s an excerpt from the book.

I would have to say a red coat that was my grandmas. She bought the coat along time ago from an expensive store. She wore it and passed it on to my oldest sister, when my sister was in high school. My sister then passed it on to my next oldest sister who wore it and then passed it on to me. It was a short red wool jacket, it always seemed to be in style and it always looked like the day she bought it. I would wear it today, if it still fit:)
I own a maternity and baby store that I work at 7 days a week. This leaves very little time for clothes shopping. So I’ll take home the very cute xs maternity dresses and tops! The baby doll style is totally in so nobody ever knows! The best part is they only cost $1 each XD
ok…ok…I was just starting high school, and my mom took me shopping. I found a beautiful lavender plaid box pleated skirt, and a cardigan in the exact same shade of lavender. I wore it the first day of class, and to my dismay, so did one of the most popular girls in school. I did think my outfit was better, because she wore hers with a pink sweater that didn’t look nearly as perfect as mine.
From probably the ages of six or seven up into my teens there was a catalogue that my mother would receive in the mail a few times each season called Storybook Heirlooms. Inside this fabulous, glossy catalog were exquisite, princess like dresses for every occasion. From a flower girl dress, to an Easter dress, to a dress to just go outside and play in, Storybook Heirlooms had it all. They had other clothes too, which were equally as pretty and delicate as those divine dresses. I remember spending hours upon hours looking through those catalogues imagining how much better my life would be if I could have some of those princess-like clothes, even just ONE thing from the catalogue would make my childhood complete. The clothes were not cheap and my mom would always tell me to wait for it to go on sale, or that everything was impractical… but when things went on sale, my size would be sold out.
One day, much to my surprise my mom showed me a dress from the sale section and asked if I wanted it. My ten year old ears could not believe it! I was getting my dress! It was a green and black plaid (black watch I think it’s called) dress, which now I think is ugly. I think my mom still has the darn thing packed away somewhere, with all of my childhood dresses, hoping they might come back in style for any future granddaughters. Though I only wore it a few times, I never felt as special or important as I did when I was wearing (or just in the presence of) my Storybook Heirlooms dress.
My first favorite outfit was really just a pair of boots…didn’t matter what I wore them with; I always feel chic and sophisticated when I had them on. I remember I begged and begged for them. My mom was sure they were so impractical that I would never wear them. Remember those boots that came up mid-calf and had the fringe and silver medallions on the sides…oh yeah, baby!
My favorite outfit of all time was my first business suit. I felt “put together” and “grown up.” I was 18 and was going to my first interview for a job that didn’t involve putting on an apron and delivering other people’s food. 🙂
My favorite outfit is one I bought at a thrift when I was 16… it was a really long purple velvet jacket with huge white fur cuffs and a white fur collar, with matching black pants. It was supposed to be for a 60s themed party, but I wore in on the weekends out to parties b/c I was so in love with it… back when I was a size zero.
Now that I’m in double digits, I wish I had that outfit so I could compare 🙂
I clearly remember my favourite outfit ever. I was fourteen. Big fan of the new show Beverly Hills 90210. My mom bought me a white t shirt with the cast on the front. It was the standard boxy cheap white t shirt of course.
I wore this black & white t shirt with a black mini skirt, white tights, black socks, and white shoes. With a black hair scrunchie.
Oh yeah baby! I loved this outfit. I thought I looked totally put together.
I know I’ve already had my turn, but I think this is a fun contest. I can almost tell the poster’s age by her favorite outfit.
How could I forget my very favorite dress of all time: a dress that was on the cover of a 1957 McCall’s magazine was purchased for me by a friend of my mom’s. My mom framed the cover of the magazine for me, and it still hangs in my bedroom.
My most memorable outfits are both from when I was a child. I was a twirler back in my younger years, and lots of the other twirlers had outfits covered in sequins. We couldn’t afford such an outfit, so my mom, being a very good seamstress, made me an outfit that was blue and had lots of sequins. I wore it to my very first competition and took 1st place in my age group. I was very proud of it.
The second one was a pink crushed velvet pants and long zip up vest to match. I found it in the Sears Catalog (I LOVED looking thru the Sears catalog) when I was about 10, and one day, while home from school sick, I found my parents Christmas list and the outfit was on there!! I was so excited, but then felt sad on Christmas Day when the gift I was opening wasn’t a surprise. I never hunted for my parent’s Christmas list again!
ok so I don’t really have an outfit so to speak..
I have random seperates that make me feel like a million bucks

2) perfectly worn in Frye ankle length boots I scored on Ebay
3) Victoria Secret knee high boots that I have worn pretty much everyday this whole winter
4) my e-ring 🙂
5) all my summer dresses & skirts
6) Charlotte beach pants (sooo comfy and prob the most compliments I ever got on anything I’ve ever worn)
7) Betsey Johnson ruffle skirt
8) Splendid lounge pants in any color (so conmy and perfect fit/length)
I can go on and on but this is totally borning to everyone but me!
I have 2 favorite outfits I wore….
my “Betty Boop” shirt w/ a red skirt and red/wh leg warmers and high top tennis shoes
and
my Guess overalls, pin with purple polka dot shirt and my awesome pin/purple cowboy shoes. I got those on a trip to Florida with my 2 sisters (I wish I still had those shoes…they were so awesome and cute)
My mother had a penchant for frilly-froo-froo stuff for her girls. My first clear memory was sitting on the front step about 3 or 4, taking off my socks with itchy-scratchy lace trim and my underwear with rows of ruffles across the butt; and, hiding them in the bushes. This lace, ruffle, pink/pastel, hairbow/barrette/short pixie cut hair early childhood she insisted upon, even then, I knew was not ‘me’.
When I was 6 my grandmother came to visit and brought me the only dress I have ever liked. It was my first favorite outfit.
If you are old enough you may remember Kate Greenaway dresses. They ALWAYS had a pocket. This dress was hunter green and white, lined cotton seersucker with two big pockets sewn into the seams, a white collar, short sleeves and a matching pair of short shorts to wear underneath.
It was the first thing I ever remember wearing that felt ‘right’, like ‘me’. No ruffles, lace, trim, seams that made it fit tight, no pale, pastel non-committal type color; it didn’t scratch, itch, feel icky on my skin and it had pockets! The better to put pebbles, feathers and other odd bits that are the treasures of early childhood. I no longer have the dress. But I still have a picture of me wearing it, crouched down in the little bug and animal cemetary I kept for dead creatures I’d find – burying a little sparrow.
[…] yeh. I’d enter the conversation at Wacky Wednesday’s Giveaway too. Because I’d want to build our industry’s visibility, support my peers, have my say […]
I have two
1) A t-shirt I bought at the very first AIDS march on Washington DC. It had patches of the AIDS quilt on it, back when the AIDS quilt was small enough to be displayed in one place. I still have that shirt packed away. I was 18 when I bought it.
2) I was 9, maybe 10 and it was right after the movie Dirty Dancing came out. All summer I wore cut-off jeans, a white t-shirt and a pair of red suspenders worn backwards. I also had a pair of white slip on Keds. I loved that outfit!
I don’t have many favorite outfits from my adult years yet, still trying to find something to fit right.
I do remember one outfit that I loved when I was about 8yrs old. It was a pair of pink biker shorts with a matching pink 1/2 top. I was a skinny scrawny thing when I was little and I just remember loving this outfit because it was the first outfit my mother let me wear that showed off my cute little belly. It was also the last, lol. I didn’t have many new clothes growing up being the youngest of 3 girls. I remember this being one of my first new summer outfits that I picked out. It just made me feel like it was my own choice and my style. Shortly after, I was introduced to the consignment stores and got to pick out plenty of new clothes, well, new to me.
The first thing that came to my mind for this is surprisingly a bridesmaid dress. I know what you’re thinking – could there really be a bridesmaid dress that fits this category? The thing that was so special about this dress is that I got to better understand the whole process of making the dress. See – it was for my friend’s wedding in Sydney, Australia. She saw this dress in a bridal magazine, called the magazine and got the name of the photographer; called the photographer and got the name of the designer; then called the designer and convinced her to make the dresses for her bridesmaids. I phoned my measurements to my friend and when I arrived in Sydney a week before the wedding I went for an initial fitting. Every day for the next week I would go back as the dress was being constructed. It was very cool and it was the best fitting piece of clothing I have ever owned. I still have it and have wished several times I could come up with a reason to wear it, but alas I have not yet.
Fun topic!
I have two articles of clothing that stand out in my mind.
The first was a pair of German lederhosen that I absolutely had to have when I was in the 7th grade. I can only imagine what my mom went without to buy the dumb things. All the cool girls had them, and I felt cool too when I wore them. I kept them for years because mom spent so much to buy them. I figured they’d come in handy for something, but they never did.
The second is my wedding dress. It was handmade by a dear friend, and I felt like a princess wearing that dress. I saved it for my daughters to wear, but they were all too tall. It is heavily appliqued with vintage lace, which is what I’m looking for now to make my daughter’s wedding dress, but somehow I haven’t been able to bring myself to take the sheers to it.
Mine was a shimmery silver loose fitting pants outfit from Brittons in Columbia, SC. It was the first “adult” New Year’s Eve party I’d been invited to and I had to have it. I think it was about $46 back then ( 70’s) and that was a lot, but I was working so I bought it and I think I was the best dressed person at that party! The funny thing is that I found it again 10 years later and actually wore it to a Halloween party with silver make-up and silver stars in my hair! I was a member of the Enterprise of Star Trek fame. Again, I think I was the best dressed person at that party! Favorite outfit by far!!
It took quite some time for my best friend and me to save our babysitting money to buy matching shirts at Cornell Bazaar in Newark, Ohio. It was an extravagance for 2 teenagers. The shirt is multicolor, multishape patchwork with all the seams stitched on the outside. Pretty soft colors and well put together prints. It has a vintage ‘hippie’ look and one of those articles of clothing that makes you smile and say ‘WOW’ outloud. It looked fantastic with our first pair of (Levi) jeans. 🙂
I came across it this past fall and put it on display for a couple of weeks in my newly opened shop alongside a photo of a young me (wearing the shirt) and my best friend of 38+ years. The locals remembered shopping at Cornell’s and many commented that had the nearly threadbare shirt been for sale, they’d have bought it to wear today.
OK, why am I always the first to post?
My favorite pc of clothing is a reversiable silk Asian Inspired jacket that my husband bought me for Christmas when I 20. I still have the jacket and my oldest daughter wears it once in a while. She is the only one that it will fit.
I saw it in a store while shopping with my soon to be husband and just thought I had to have it. I could not afford so it stayed at the store. I was so suprised when I found it under the tree Christmas morning.
