Maybe you’ve already seen this shot I took of a children’s consignment shop. Their peeky-bear called attention to their shop, even though their display windows were tinted so dark they were useless in the normal way.
A blank wall just would NOT do, I can hear Sue McC, an old NARTS buddy (oops, I mean a NARTS buddy of long standing 😉 ) saying. So look at her variation on the theme!
UPDATE 6-10-10
I would be remiss if I didn’t Share with you this similar rendition, at a bakery in the Village of the Arts in Bradenton FL. See, imagination is not limited to resale and consignment shopkeepers 😉
Hi Jan, it’s really hard to deal with sunlight and the need of window displays to be seen.
One REAL SHARP way of dealing with this that I saw: the shopkeeper cut an oval in the tinting just large enough to “frame” a single mannequin or dress form, used vinyl curlicues on the outside of the glass to make the oval look like a feminine picture frame.
With side-mounted track lighting on the dress form, her window looked like a million bucks and was SO easy to do: simply a stunning outfit with a small table pulled up to the hip with the triangular array of accessories.
Wish I had a photo to show you.

Love it!!
I too had all windows tinted with the thought I never wanted to face a possible return of an ‘unsold’ with sun fading. Before that, I had every intention of placing clothing in each and every window and didn’t realize how much the tinting would block the view inside. The clothing was not the least visible.
I hung a light or two in some front windows which helps make it look ‘open’.
I think this is a fantastic idea.
