Are your showcases boring your shoppers to death?

March 9, 2011 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Many a consignment, resale, and thrift shop uses glass showcases to display jewelry, small knick-knacks, and pricey goods. But alas, many forget the first syllable:

“Show”

So, today, a showcase (groan pun) of showcases especially chosen to be applicable to resale:

Jewelry display cases can be a real snooze...but they don't have to be

Jewelry display cases can be a real snooze...but they don't have to be. This looks like a photo for insurance purposes, not a tempting array of pretty things.

Even cases which mix home decor and jewelry can be a real snooze.

Here, home decor and beads are arranged on colorfully-draped risers.

Keys to making your showcases really showy:

  • Vary heights. This is the quickest and easiest thing to do.
  • Use colorful and/or textured underlays to separate, highlight, brighten up. Change out as needed: burlap to ground brass, chartreuse chiffon to perk up black-and-white.
  • Arranging stuff Rule #1: The spaces in-between should be narrower than the pieces displayed, otherwise the blank spaces seem as important as the merchandise.
  • Rule #2 Overlap objects. Keep the eye amused.
  • Not everything has to be dead-on square. Angle items to “lead” onlookers from one treasure to another.
I thank the shops whose pictures I borrowed. I think I disguised them well enough that no one is embarrassed, not even the stray mannequin or two.
