Over on Apartment Therapy, this photo of a shop intrigued me… look at that glowing focal point on the back wall… drawing customers ever deeper into the shop. (If you don’t have a back-wall “draw” in your shop, consider one. They’re incredibly useful, intriguing, and make your shop seem like it goes on forever. Kinda like high heels for the “legs” of your shop!)
Is it a window? A light sculpture?
Nope. It’s a ruffled translucent shower curtain, with a cheap floor lamp behind it, and its original function was simply to hide some unsightly mechanicals. But this savvy shopkeeper turned a negative into a big-time positive, with a Five-Minute Fix.
And heck, you don’t need to be covering something up… but this glowing “sculpture” adds true dimension to a boxy shop. I even like the fact that it’s ruffly in contrast to all the square shapes of the store shelves. What do you think?
PS Seems I got ahead of myself and referred to this solution in one of my pins on Pinterest. Take a look at the Consignment/ Resale Decor board over there for a more clean-lined possible solution.

We just added a lighted wall sign in the back of our store (idea stolen from the Dressbarn, just on a smaller scale) where it was always too dark. Now it looks like sunshine is coming thru a window. The room has no window. It’s great!
I sometimes think we get a similar effect from plugging a lamp in at a couple of spots around the shop ~ when one lamp sells, I just plug in another.
We also use white lights around the clearance area in the back corner to draw people back and through. I love the lit curtain though… thinking now of anything ugly enough to hide. hmmm
