Integrity of Price: “At some point, you look desperate.”

February 29, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

I’m sure, as retailers, all you consignment, resale, and thrift shopkeepers are aware that JCPenney is relaunching, rethinking their branding, reinventing how the shopping public thinks about their business. At their Launch Event Presentation to their investors, they address where .

the iconic department store is headed, and why.

It’s about pricing. And how the customer knows what she wants to pay.

And how, if she can’t trust your pricing, you’re history.

It’s a long video, but I encourage those who are really interested in customers, retail, and price integrity watch at least the first 30 minutes. I guarantee you won’t be sorry.I guarantee you’ll learn something. A lotta something.

Watch the video.

Thanks for sharing that, Kate. I watched the entire presentation and came away with lots of ideas for my own shop. One thing bothered me, however–at no point did either the CEO or president talk about any training for their sales staff. Marketers and buyers have apparently been heavily involved in this transformation, but has anything been done to tweek the skills of the ground level sales people? Such a massive reworking is going to need a similar followup in personnel training and orientation. At least, that’s what my experience in the business world has been.

Excellent point, Nancy. Wonder what scripts they’ve been supplied with. I can just see a left-in-the-dark staffer saying to a shopper, “No we don’t have sales much any more.” In fact, I think I’ll go visit one of their stores and see what the staff says.

I love the new JCP it makes sense. Price is not always the thing that a customer is looking for even in resale. Value is perceived. I wise JCP the best of luck, they are taking a huge chance,
