So I want to sell my store of almost 20 years… How would be if I posted a sign on the door or dressings rooms . would it be good for future business, or scare away future consigners not sure how to go about this. I think rumors of possible sale is worse . any ideas?
Hi Lucy, How you handle the public announcement of selling yr biz really depends on your goals, your timetable and so on. I’m sure that you have, after 20 yrs, some possible contacts who might be interested to talk to first, and this might be a better first step. Hope that you have, in your biz reference library, the TGtbT Business Valuation Kit which includes Selling your Shop and Buying a Resale Business. http://tgtbt.com/shopthrive.htm#15
Thanks Kate , I ordered the kit. I do have a couple of people that are interested. unfortunatly the one kept me hanging on for a year backed out. I have 1 other client., but if that falls threw. is it a good idea to have in store advertising?
If you will be selling the business with just the help of a lawyer versed in selling/buying businesses, and you have no other prospects, I’d say yes… but first, I would contact your best consignors and shoppers and ask them if they have any acquaintances that might be interested. NOT if THEY are interested… although, of course, that’s likely who will come out of the wood. That way, you can start serious talks with previously-known folks, before you announce it to the world and spend a lot of time talking to dreamers. Be sure to get your ducks in a row first… you want to approach this in a businesslike and effective way. No way will you again let someone draw you on for a year, will you?
