What consignment, resale, thrift shopkeepers thought…

April 15, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Consignment, resale, thrifts VOTE in the Too Good to be Threw pollsWell, it’s springtime and I’m cleaning out the TGtbT.com web site. I ran across a page probably none of you have seen… or at least, not in the last 5+ years.

It’s the poll results from a regular series we used to run.

Take a look at it. There’s a dozen topics, results, comments, and my commentary. Interesting, if old? Or shall I toss it to the curb?

Interesting poll but very hard to believe 56% broke even in the first 12 months. The next group (2-3 years) is probably the more honest answer. My store turned a profit at month 22 and I’ve never looked back.

Of course, breaking even is only the first goal. How about paying yourself and then doing the real test of figuring out how much you make per hour! You might be disappointed with the results. Don’t forget to add the hours you work on your business when you’re NOT in the store. The final figure might be a little scary. Ask your CPA for help with this. It is a very worthwhile exercise!

So, Rachel, you think they didn’t give an “honest answer”… or perhaps you have some qualms about the (your?) past? No worries… it’s the future we all have control over!
And yes, being an entrepreneur means you spend many more “off” hours working, in some way, on your business than those with assigned, hired hours and jobs they can “forget” when they’re not on the time clock. Most of us wouldn’t have it any other way… and I’m sure you agree!

Worth keeping and reviewing, some key topics are timeless.
Love that you provide helpful tips and guides to improve in each area.
Would be interesting to see similar questions/responses for last year.

I agree, don’t delete – well worth the read – even if from a while ago!

Don’t delete! We just opened our store 3 weeks ago and I found this info helpful and interesting. In fact, I’d love to see a new series of polls.
