The Gap: A hot-to-not story of American retailing.

April 29, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Resale shopkeepers can learn from the GapYou can learn a lot from history… even history of a “real” store.

What went wrong? …interviews …depict a company that chased after rivals, rather than charting its own course, and that cut quality and lost touch with customers. Simply put, it filled its stores with stuff that people didn’t want. [Emphasis Kate’s]

Intrigued by the colossal flop of their logo change? There are some lessons even the smallest of shops can learn in this article where a designer tries to fix the “new” logo, written before Gap changed back to the original.

What’s YOUR experience with Gap-branded clothing?

Has interest remained high over the last few years, or has it become a dog of a brand? And how does Kid Gap do? And speaking of Express, is that a sought-after brand or has it died in our industry? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

We also do very well selling Gap- we consider it a better brand in our store. And we even have an outlet a mere 8 miles away with which to compete!

Love the varying opinions… isn’t it great that we all have our own clientele? Betsy, tell us about your make-your-own-baby-food event… that’s unique!

We have had pretty good success with Baby Gap and some Maternity with as well. What our Austin customers like better is some of the more inspired designs of the Old Navy brand. Many hold up just as well as their more expensive Baby Gap peers.

Thanks Sharon, Interesting that the Old Navy is equivalent to at least some Baby Gap, and the designs are more what mothers want. The only Old Navy in our area recently closed, so I can’t go tug seams and crinkle fabrics in my fist. (Yeh, I’m the one doing that.)

GAP kids does very well for us as well as maternity- Jrs and women’s we don’t even take because it sells so poorly.

Thanks Tawny. I’m thinking, if geenormous international corporations would simply ask us, the resale industry, how their 1- or 3-year old products are holding onto their resale value… WE could save them whole piles of money, huh?
