Recently, I challenged (and bribed*) thrift, resale, and consignment shops to get together, and post on their Facebook pages,
What $50 gets you resale-wise
Some fun answers came in. Click through to get some ideas of what shopkeepers came up with (and be sure to click on the photos themselves to see their friends and fans’ comments on their FB pages!):
- One post each from 2 shops in Alaska: https://www.facebook.com/sarasotakate/posts/360980777316927 and https://www.facebook.com/sarasotakate/posts/279661752143551

- and chic workday outfit at https://www.facebook.com/howtoconsign/posts/423533037703037
I hope that this challenge motivates other shops to consider this as a one-time, occasional or even regular post to show their fans, followers, friends, friends of friends and the rest of the world to see what other wonderful shopping can be done.
I think I might have missed another entrant or two… if so, post the URL of your entry in the comments below.
It was disappointing that no home goods or thrift shops immediately hopped on this idea, but I’m hoping that they will be inspired and perhaps even find this a valuable tool in their social media arsenal!
* Bribe: I promised a $100 gift certificate to the “best” post. Kinda weird that I have to monetize the use of a free idea, but. Our winner is Repeat Street in Gurnee IL! Congratulations, Julie, and thanks to all of you who participated.
(Note: I am in full-on “consultant” mode recently, so perhaps I’ll “consult” about the ideas represented here tomorrow and how they could be polished and become a real asset to shopkeepers. Today, I’m off to the circus… no, really, the REAL circus. Maybe I’ll get me a red foam nose!)

Hi Kate,I was wondering if I could gift my prize to another shop owner that is struggling. She has contacted me to help her and confessed that she didn’t have enough money to buy your manual. Julie JablonowskiRepeat Street401 N Route 21 #26Gurnee, IL 60031847-596-2203www.repeatstreet.com
How kind of you, Julie, of course you may gift your gift certificate! Just contact me via email so we can set it up!
Thanks so much Kate!! It was a really fun challenge. I want to set up displays like this more often in my store. My customers enjoyed it, too. We had to change the display today when someone bought part of the outfit we set up. That is always fun for us.
Well of course. That’s the POINT 😉 … I never understand shopkeepers who get upset that their displays sell… hell-OH?!?
http://www.facebook.com/LunenburgCommunityConsignment was a home goods submission, but I think I might have posted it too late to be in the contest. I still wanted to do it, though, because I thought it was a great idea. No monetizing motivation required. Thanks for all of your good work and inspiration.
Cheryl, a great album of goodies. I MEAN, where can the average citizen find a lobster playing the flute? Oh, the wonders of resale for real style (note: workable headline/ subject line… make a note of this note…)! Many thanks! (PS I had that calico cat doorstop in my younger, much younger, years. Must be an antique by now.)
