With a little finagling, you can plan out your new store layout for 2013 without a lot of sweat and shoving. Just use
this interactive floor plan.
It’s actually from a baby furniture vendor, but using your imagination, this could be JUST the thing to experiment with changing up your traffic flow.
First, set your dimensions, then add doors/ restrooms etc, then find some “furniture” to stand in for retail racks, shelving and so on. Just look for the shape of an element, because each piece of furniture, once you drag it into the plan, can be sized appropriately.
If you choose, under “Patterns”, “tile, basic, 12-inch”, you’ll have a 1-foot grid pattern so you can leave 36″ for secondary aisles, and 42″ or 48″ for major pathways.

Could be, some store fixtures company offers a similar interactive planning tool on their site, with easily-used icons for racks and so on. Does anyone know of such a site?

Lakeshore, a school supply store also has this kind of tool for putting together a classroom. I have found it very helpful for planning spaces.
Good to know, Rebecca… thanks for the additional resource!
This is so much better than using Excel or Paint. Thanks Kate!
