So, what’s your story?
That simple question is one that, if answered, will really help you in your marketing of your consignment, resale, or thrift store.
Read this short essay, and get back to me… comment below, with your story, or tell us why you don’t think this is important for your shop.

Hi, Kate!
Scratching my head this morning trying to figure out if I have met Tara…and if not who and where is she? Tara’s comments (except for the stroller…that will cause me to dismantle one) could have been written by me!
And yes, Auntie Kate, your always offer food for thought…
Connie, Most often the person’s name here on the blog will link directly to their shop’s web site… as yours and Tara’s do. (For those of you who want to do this, when you make a comment, simply fill the URL spot with your URL.)
Some shopkeepers use their gravatar which allows for a shop logo, site URL, Facebook URL, etc etc… (hover your mouse over my “picture” to see an example. Some browsers won’t show it, but most will…) If you have a spare 5 minutes, here’s my post on the subject: https://auntiekate.wordpress.com/2011/09/28/tired-of-being-a-mystery-man-or-a-man-at-all/
GREAT article. Read it several times then had my main employee read it. We hashed out what problem we solve and what our specialty really is.
Surprisingly, what we came up with was that the problem we solve (products you need to clothe your family…cuz you might DIE without them! I realize there’s probably a much more eloquent way to phrase that ) is much different than our specialty (providing CLEAN, CURRENT stuff in a clean and highly organized environment for the “discerning bargain shopper”).
There are stores that could pop up and beat us on price. But not by much. And what we DO excel at would be tough for others to match. We’ve spent years honing our detailing of toys & equipment (how many people actually know how to completely dismantle a stroller and appropriately wash all the parts and can then put it all back together correctly?!), figuring out what styles are hot for our miss/jr shoppers, and harmonizing our atmosphere to the way our customers prefer to shop (size order, color order, rack layout, etc).
Thanks for sharing, Kate! Made us really think!
Thanks, Tara, that’s high praise coming from you, whom I consider one of the savviest shopkeepers I have the privilege of “e-knowing”!
