Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

March 2, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

If ever there was a profession for which Dr. Seuss is perfectly suited, it’s resale.

Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss, and may his wisdom, below, get you through good and bad days!

I also had some fun with Dr. Seuss’s birthday! I didn’t have a store sale, because I already had one running on Winter items, so we had a boat-load of fun with Dr. Seuss trivia! I put together a bunch of questions and answers about Dr. Seuss movies and books, and posted a question each hour on our Facebook page. The first correct answer for each question won a $10.00 gift certificate and everyone loved it! It was silly, but fun! The first woman to come pick up her certificate had never been in the store before and ended up purchasing enough items that paid for her certificate AND the rest of them that were given out that day! We were also offering % off IN store that day at checkout for a correct answer. My 5 year old was with me that day, so he was able to help a few people! We made sure that any attempt at a correct answer was given a % off! 🙂

I love, Danielle, the spirit of your shop, as seen in that last sentence, “We made sure that any attempt at a correct answer was given a % off!”

Hi Kate…this is the perfect thing to receive today! It’s my birthday too and i’m also in the process of opening a women’s clothing consignment shop in April – (in Ontario, Canada) discovering every time I turn around how much I don’t yet know. I received my Too good to be Threw manual the other day – it’s terrific and I probably won’t let it out of my sight for months. love the book, love your blog! Thank you….Shirley

Love that poster too. You’ve probably addressed this before, but I see all kinds of people who sell Dr Seuss quotes, is that legal? I’ve asked some people who sell it and they don’t give me a straight answer!

Lindsay, the entire area of copyright is one which has made generations of lawyers quite rich. I think the telling point is what you’re selling, and how you are using other people’s words, but I wouldn’t presume to be able to give you advise on this! Heck, I know someone who was sued for writing Gucci Gucci Goo on a baby shower cake, so….

Thanks, Kate! We took you up on your promotional idea and are running a 20% off sale on spring this weekend! The party store even had the Cat in the Hat hats and a 4 ft poster of the cat as a welcome sign that is at our door. We included the rainbows and butterflies quote in our ad…since we have our carousel pony in the store and a basket of children’s books at the check out counter with a sign about honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday by reading a book to a child.

Oh, Connie, you’ve made my day! Hope your day’s a success. I often feel from the lack of response, like NO ONE thinks any of my ideas are very good ;( or that my idea is not applicable to their “special situation”… but as Dr. S would say, Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.
