Gimmee caps. For consignment and resale shops.

January 31, 2018 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

The "original" gimme cap, in a frightening presentation. Gimmee caps are some of the most noticeable promotional products there are. You see this guy, you’re reminded of John Deere products. You might even chat with him about what piece of equipment he has, how he likes it, where he got it, where’s that? They treat you good there? Should I buy my John Deere there?

In other words…word of mouth.

Fueled by a giveaway with your name on it. Which leads to the question

What can I as a resale/ consignment/ thrift shopkeeper give a customer that will start wod of mouth?

Pens are a common gimmee, because they’re inexpensive and who doesn’t need another pen. To make yours remark-able, order an unusual color or consider, instead, a marker… or even, if yours is a children’s shop, a mini-packet of crayons.

Nail files are another item that everyone needs. Give your potential client several, and ask her to share with friends or workmates.

If you sell home goods, what’s every shopper always asking you for? A measuring tape! Would it be wonderful to be able to gift them with a store-branded measure for them to use over and over? Here’s an example.

Temporary tattoos are fun if you’ve set up a booth at a off-site event, indoors or out. Google “temporary tattoos” to find something that suits your image that you can add your logo to… or, have tattoos made of just your logo, if you have a cute one!

But I love the cap… can’t I give caps away?

You can, if you can afford it. Personalized caps run from about $4 to $8 each. Affordable to John Deere if it sells more farm equipment, perhaps not so affordable in your business. But here’s an idea: SELL them. Sell them at a tiny markup, just enough to cover the occaional free cap you give away to an enthusiastic word-of-mouther, as a door prize during a promotional event, or just because she bemoans her  terrible new haircut to you.

Kate, you are right on point with your suggestion. We gave away branded 5 ft tape measures last fall to coincide with our store name change. The customers LOVED it! They were “free” to each customer with a purchase of $20 or more, but of course we made sure our frequent shoppers got one regardless of spend. They really enjoyed getting a gift from us.

I was always enamored of the printed on flexible plastic? (vinyl? something like that) yard “sticks” Home Goods used to have… and the tape measure I carry in my purse was an advertising specialty too!

We just got our first one today…..my daughter, who runs our new store, will now be walking around with “Vintage Addition” on her hat. And since she’s just 20, I’m sure she will have lots of questions to answer!! (Kate, have you seen the new store? http://www.facebook.com/thevintageaddition
