Shopping Resale for Christmas: The More the Merrier

November 19, 2018 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

What do shoppers want when they’re Christmas-gift seeking?

Gathering gift ideas in your consignment shop

Selection. Abundant selection.

They aren’t sure what they want. Or what their loved ones will want. Sometimes, they’re even clueless as to what to look for.

That’s why resale consignment, and thrift shops need to pile it on this time of year. Your displays, your social media posts, your in-store signage needs to point to two things:

#1 We have the selection.

Make that swing-shop display table look full and festive. Use risers (empty boxes gift-wrapped are perfect) to overload your display with choice. Keep it FULL: If that means adding the plain red mugs or the sparkly gold sandals to fill in space left by sold items, do it.

Your photo posts? Forget the tastefully solitary designer watch. Add 2-4 more items an imaginary recipient of the Movado watch might also/ instead like: the cufflinks, billfold, Hermès tie. Your follower needs to know that wow look at all the men’s gifts they have.

Your window? Neatly fold and stack those bright sweaters high (Maybe tie them together with a wide wired ribbon with extravagant bow and streamers?) Fan out an armload of children’s books (and add a stack of videos?) Take every.last.candlestick. in the shop and cluster them all in one glorious, accessible window display. Preferably on mirror so they look even more sparkly and wonderful.

and #2 You can have the abundance of gifts you want.

The subliminal message to piles and stacks and pyramids of goods is, of course, that you can have it all. So be sure to, especially on your website, blog, and social media, show what $20 will buy, or Redo the living room for $475, or How far will $100 go at MyShop? by adding prices to your photos. Holiday shopping time is dear and no one will take the time to ask you the price. Show it to them now

… and don’t forget, of course, to make buying it now as simple and swift as you can.

Thanks for the recent chat about keeping the family run shop “open” all the time! Husband and I were considering closing the shop for our vacation in January (slowest month) but thanks to a couple recent seasonal hires and your chat, I thought “why not?” figure something out to stay open! And we did it!
