A multi-million dollar ad campaign is going on,

and not a single consignment, resale, or thrift store is riding on its coat tails?

It was several weeks ago when I blogged about Small Business Saturday, an American Express promotion, and I thought my resale peers would be full of ideas on how their shops could get local attention and added business with this shop local movement, timed to gather shoppers in pre-holiday mode.

In case you forgot about this heaven- (or at least big business-) sent opportunity to highlight your business, here are some ideas from various sources around the web. Hope you get inspired by some of these ideas, and here’s hoping you will share your plans by commenting below!

Purchase credit at a consignment shopI saw this on a web site the other day and thought

What a brilliant idea!

Store your consignors’ value on their gift cards, which they can use anytime and call it

“Purchase Credit”

or they can cash it in of course.

Allow your consignors to look up, online,

how much their gift card’s worth today… I think that would be SO motivating and exciting, don’t you? Oh sure, lots of shops use the great online “check your accounts” services offered by most software suppliers… but I think this is lots more exciting and motivating, don’t you?

The site I found this on is clothingxchange.com, and the service the shop apparently uses is worldpay.us Perhaps one or more of our viewers will investigate this and share her/his findings here?

Of course, to have petty cash... you need to know How to Make More MoneyIt amazes me that some consignment, resale, and thrift shops don’t manage small expenditures with a

petty cash fund.

It’s by far the easiest way to do so. Here’s how:

Establish A Petty Cash Fund
Designate an individual and a backup person as custodian of the fund. In this case “many hands do not make light work” . This fund is used for minor and unanticipated expenses where a check can’t be written or the amount is so small that you don’t want to write a check. Some examples include buying pizza for the staff, postage stamps, minor office supplies, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. A pre-numbered voucher or ticket should be filled out and approved for each expenditure. When the balance in the fund becomes low a check from your regular bank account should be issued and cashed to replenish the fund and the expenses recorded in your accounting records. Surprise counts of petty cash should occasionally be done to make sure that employees are not “borrowing” from this source of cash. Counting the fund is very easy. The total amount of the tickets and the cash on hand should equal to the fund’s established balance.
