What will your shoppers be doing on Black Friday and “Small Business Saturday”? If you are like most consignment, resale, and thrifts shops,

you’re not looking forward to losing your customers

to the lure of the mall, the big boxes, and their “Gift Ideas Under $30” displays of bright glittery things.

Why? Why do you let the “no one shops secondhand for presents” belief stop you (more…)

Fine tuning your consignment, resale, or thrift shop social mediaOver on Facebook, a consignment shop had a great idea to call attention to their shop…over and over again.  It was an appeal to the shop’s fans to post and share by commenting. Take a look at the results.

Good idea to get interaction, but notice how silly the “comments” are. In fact, they’re not comments at all.

Love It Again gave her fans some suggestions, which made scrolling through the “entries” fun. They were day-specific ideas of what to post… since that’s what her clientele was DOING that day! Clever: she was reinforcing that the shop is a real part of her fans’ lives.  Shop Local at its best. I’m so proud of this HowToConsign.com Sponsor.

So, maybe make a similar promotion on your shop’s business page do double duty:

Ask them to describe, in 3-6 words, why they love your shop… and tell them they can repost every few hours by simply saying ditto to their first post! That way, everyone sees why everyone else loves your business, and how much they REALLY love you. Chances are, some folks may have been following your contest, but never stopped in… so your regulars are motivating these potential customers.

Which is great, right? But wait, there’s more! The extra benefit?

You can get some really marketable testimonials in a flash!

More on testimonials: How Do you Get Them to Say Nice Things About Your Shop? and don’t forget to print out all those wonderful compliments for the real-life message board in your entryway. And note Resolution #4 here, from 2010… you can fulfill that for the whole year in one short time span!

Button leggings: what a cool "Pinterest Party" possibility for your consignment, resale, thrift shop!!!The hottest social media now is Pinterest. Would it not be cool to have a

“Pinterest Party” in your shop?

Issue invites (“you plus a friend are invited…”) via social media, broadcast email, in-store and on your blog, and of course, on Pinterest!, make it a “potluck bringing your fav Pinterest nibble” and spend the evening making 2-3 Pinterest crafts… something to do with your merchandise, natch, like these denim beads (minus the paint…plus other fabric strips you have ready to go) or any button craft (gather up your lost-button box, have your invitees bring buttons, ask your donors/ suppliers for same starting TODAY, or go find piles at your neighboring thrift peer!)

Good timing for this would be the

first or second week in November,

before everyone gets hyper about the holidays. And what perfect timing to reinforce that holidays are better with resale, considering that

It’s the thought that counts, not the waste.

(That’s the motto of 50 Days & 50 Ways to have a Merry Recycled Holiday our 50 reasons for YOUR clientele to use resale for a merry and eco-friendly holiday season.)

So: You get to find new friends via Pinterest, you get to have a fun evening building customer loyalty, and you end up with new customers, new potential holiday gifts, and one TON of goodwill. Hey, and nibbles too? I am SO there.

Think this would be workable for your consignment, resale or thrift? Why, or why not? Or maybe this idea has you thinking about your own unique twist? Join the conversation, below!

Resale, consignment, thrift: a MOUNTAIN of great stuff!

Resale, consignment, thrift: a MOUNTAIN of great stuff!

Recently, I challenged (and bribed*) thrift, resale, and consignment shops to get together, and post on their Facebook pages,

What $50 gets you resale-wise

Some fun answers came in. Click through to get some ideas of what shopkeepers came up with (and be sure to click on the photos themselves to see their friends and fans’ comments on their FB pages!):

This post appeared on my news feed on Facebook a few weeks back. Maybe it did on yours, as well.

Karen is sending out an S.O.S.!!! Our VP in charge of toys is on vacation and we need help putting together this army of Power Rangers! Bring in your boys to help us with the toys!

I loved the whole concept so much, I shared the photo and added this comment to my consignment and resale friends:

What a PERFECT way to get moms with kids in the shop, just as the summer starts… and to build community! Won’t the kids have FUN! Make a NOTE of this… I LOVE IT, which is suitable since it’s LOVE IT AGAIN!

Monique answered: The kids have a ball when they patiently try to “teach” us how to play. And that, of course, is just such fun for all of us here in the shop!

Love It Again is a Sponsor (Proud, I hope!) of HowToConsign.com, and you can visit her live link and Facebook link on our Directory of Professional Resalers.
