While gathering my thoughts and notecards and camera for the NARTS Bus Tour of consignment, resale, and thrift shops coming up soon during their annual Conference in Indianapolis, I ran across some notes from past events…

Looking out the windows going from shop to shop on the bus, I spotted a funky antique shop called Rust & Dust. Wouldn’t that make a great name for a furniture resale shop’s back-room as-is bargain area?

“I have two kids, and I shop consignment,” the woman said. “So I basically figured I know how to shop for it, so I can sell it. Then I ran across this empty store and here I am! It’s so much FUN, running a consignment shop. It’s just like the garage sales I ran for my neighbors.”

Less than 3 years later, her resale shop closed abruptly, leaving unpaid consignors, outstanding debts, and a very stressed-out family.

Have you invited them?

I attended a book-signing last night. The reason I was there, of course, was to meet the public, sign my book, The Picker Who Perished, a consignment shop mystery novel, and sell it…but as usual, I was on the look-out for ideas to help consignment and resale shop owners who frequent my web site, Too Good to be Threw, promote their businesses.

Invite suppliers to your consignment, resale or thrift shopAnd, of course, those who seek find. An independent bookstore owner from the next town down had invitations he was handing out to the 15-20 authors in the room, inviting them to schedule a book-signing in his shop. It wasn’t, of course, just a hand-it-to-’em and get on to the next prospect. The shopkeeper was engaging the authors in discussion, he had something complimentary to say to each person, and he was (more…)
