While I was in Fernandina Beach this week, this building caught my eye… and you can see why!
The window boxes are painted plywood (click the photo to enlarge) so they don’t need watering or weeding.
They really make the building stand out…and the cost is just about nil.
No talent in this department? I’ll bet one of your customers has…and would be thrilled to barter a shop gift certificate. Heck, you might even end up with a whole year’s worth of “seasonal garden” decor to install every 3 months to keep your look truly eye-catching!
(Imagine poinsettias in candy-striped “boxes” for holiday, tall daffodils for spring, mums for fall…in your local sports team’s colors 😉 )
The secret to these faux-plantings looking good is the intriguing shape of the applied board, so work on that first. I’m guessing it’ll need to be marine plywood too, so your artwork lasts.
Heck, you could even craft a screw-on accessory for intermittent use: a “garden stake” that reads New Arrivals or SALE or Remember Mom!

Very cute shop!
How cute is that!
@Jenni: It doesn’t have anything on the sidewalk ’cause it’s out of business… ah well. @Patty: that’s the point of these “flower boxes”… they are permanent (or as permanent as you’d like them to be, I would LOVE to see them change every few months.)
Very cute. I love the window boxes. The only down side to putting bright things outside is if you miss a day, your customers call to see if you’re open!
What a cute shop! The only thing it’s missing is a few special things outside on a sunny day. I always drag out a handful of colorful things – even on not-so-sunny days:)
