Small Business Saturday: Jump on the AmEx bandwagon

November 18, 2010 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

If they're providing the gilt and the horsepower, might as well jump on.

Are consignment, resale and thrift shops able to take advantage of the Small Business Saturday (November 27 2010) promotional events?

You betcha.

If you’re just getting up to speed on it, here’s all the resources you might need, over on Sharing, the Too Good to be Threw Professional Resalers’ discussion board.

More info on SBS.

So how ya gonna get ’em in?

Choose one or two WIIFM messages to promote your shop, that are unique to the small-business way of doing business. Here’s some reasons to “shop small business” you could develop. (Thrift stores, especially, I have learned through my one-on-one consultations, are woefully lax on using #9. )

Take a look at the Tweet HowToConsign chose to send out this morning. You might want to retweet that while you ponder how best to highlight your shop between now and next Saturday. Not totally sure what a retweet (RT) involves?

Not good enough:

Tweets, Facebook, or broadcast emails such as these simply aren’t gonna do it. All these messages will get is a ho-hum, so what, what’s it to me reaction…which is definitely not the emotional response you want to get, is it?

  • Think Big, Shop Small on “Small Business Saturday”
  • Support the small businesses that rock our communities.
  • please help support small businesses like us and so many others
  • I am getting on board with Small Business Saturday
  • oooh Small Business Saturday…that is definitely one I can get behind!

and worst of all: GET $25 FOR SHOPPING ON SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY (oh boy, could that tweet cause some shop-damaging misunderstandings…)
