5 Minute Fix: Getting the most out broadcast emails

September 16, 2011 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Learning some basic tricks about being the best resale shopkeeperContinuing our week-long series on The Internet: It’s free, but do you get FULL VALUE? with the top 3 things to remember when you are composing and sending broadcast email blasts.

1- Your subscribers are busy people.

Make your messages

  • short,
  • sweet,
  • and focused.

Bullet points are called that because they are ammunition which strike the bullseye.

To call your viewers’ attention to additional material, include a link to your blog where you have posted all the doings in your great shop.

2- Your subscribers are busy people.

Make sure, sure, sure they understand who that colorful, professional email is from. Realize that your viewers receive email from a variety of businesses… some of which might be very similar to yours. Goodness knows you don’t want them to be reminded of another shop, when it’s yours you’re marketing! Read the 5 things every email blast needs to contain.

3- Your subscribers are busy people.

Give them all the facts so they don’t have to exert any effort to answer your call to action. If they have to look up your phone number to “call now” or somehow scrounge up your Sunday hours when you tell them to “Stop by this Sunday”… you will lose 90% of those folks who would have, if they could have, without extra work in their already-busy day. Don’t make them work to do what you’ve just asked them to do. They won’t.

You might like:

  • Using your created email for more than just one shot.
  • Making your readers feel special.
  • How vital is your subject line? More vital than your content.

Bonus tip:

Create and use a title for your emails that references directly your web site’s URL. Especially if your URL is a variation on your shop’s name. Maybe your shop is Marty’s Attic, but your URL is martysmytown.com Get folks familiar with your URL by showing it at the top of every email you send out.

Coming up next in this series, the 3 biggest mistakes on your web site. Stay tuned!
