More on “showcasing” your shop on your web site

September 12, 2012 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

I am a real NUT when it comes to using your website to get customers in your shop.

Single-color business cards

Choose one color. And one color only. Ah, the good old days.

Maybe it’s because I opened my shop WAYbackWHEN when advertising was all print, and when doing an ad or making a brochure in full color was so incredibly expensive. Heck, even full-color business cards were a financial investment.

So I am now a nut about

Hey it’s FREE

as far as graphics go. Adding interest and color and scads of photos?

It’s FREE.

So  why NOT use your web site to really introduce future clients to your resale, thrift or consignment shop? Why not choose 5, 6, 9 good photos of your shop, and let the world see them?

Why not create a “virtual shop tour”?

Like this one, which isn’t even about HER business, just one she visited? Don’t you wanna go see that shop? Don’t you think this would be great on your web site? So what is holding you back? Can’t be the bucks. Maybe it’s….?

PS Even if you aren’t about to change your web site based on my opinion, go look at the shop photos anyway. Many a great retail idea in each of them.

This website is better than most but is missing the mark on some important elements.

-The email opt-in form is hardly visible and difficult to find. There is also no incentive to sign up!

    – The photos do NOT include any PEOPLE! Always include people in your pictures, especially people entering your store or, even better, leaving your store with shopping bags (yes, you need photo releases but well worth the effort).

Finally, a website should tell you within a few seconds what your business is all about. Although this site is visually pleasing, it fails to quickly explain what your biz is all about!

    Thanks Kate!

Absolutely true, Vanessa… but of course, this example is a blog entry about another business, it’s not the site for that business. I am TOTALLY in agreement about having PEOPLE in your web photos, thanks for re-affirming that.
We’d love to see YOUR web site… can you add that to your post?
