Sharon makes name badges for her consignment shop

April 22, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Recently, Sharon Munroe of Little Green Beans in Austin TX, sent me an intriguing link she thought might be helpful for her fellow HTC Sponsors.

Name badges stay on the side of a filing cabinet when not being worn.

So what did I do? I suggested she give us a report on these Reusable Name Badges. Just a quick note, I said. Here’s her report:

  • Ordered the Re-usable Name Badges from Best Name Badges online.
  • They provide their own clear labels suitable for names, logos and other info., along with the badge hardware.
  • I ordered the minimum quantity of 10 for our children’s store.
  • The badges come in different shapes and sizes. I went with the basic format first: 1.5″ high x 3″ wide.
  • Magnetic backings are a must for team members to not snag their clothes. They are stored on our office filing cabinet (as shown in the photo) when team members are not on the sales floor.
  • Once the labels are printed, the total assembly time is 1 minute per badge.
  • Changing them out with new names/messages takes just 1 minute more – peel off the label and place a new one in its place.
  • Modeling the new name badges at Little Green BeansI opted to use my own labels which easily format in a Microsoft Word label template and print on standard Avery-brand labels (style number 8660 which are slightly smaller than the 1.5 x 3″ hardware), which I already have at the store.
  • Alternatively, one can figure out the dimensions of the included labels or pay $39 for proprietary software.
  • I print the labels on the store color laser printer.
  • Mine include my store graphics: a bean vine like the header on my website. We have vines and stalks in a lot of our store communications for Little Green Beans.
  • I made the team members’ names as large as possible and in bold, black type so they are readable from a distance.
Total Time for this Project is Less than 1 Hour: 5 Minutes to Order, 15 Minutes to Configure the Label Layout, 1 Minute to Print, 1 Minute Each to Assemble.
Total Cost: $65 plus the labels I had already purchased and were on hand.

Wow! Now there’s a “quick note” for you. These badges are great if you have an ever-changing staff of helpers, or if, as Sharon mentioned, you want to use your staff’s badges as a temporary promotional tool.

Thanks Sharon… we can all see why you’re such a success that Inc. Mag even featured you!

Thank you for the great lead! I love the magnetic backing so it won’t snag clothing!
