What do YOU call your dressing rooms?

October 4, 2013 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Do you have a row of dressing rooms? How do you communicate which is which to staff and shoppers?

PLEASE tell me you don’t call them 1 and 2 and 3 and so on…

When you COULD be using them as another way to brand your consignment shop, another way to set your resale shop apart from the mall clones, or your thrift shop stand out in a Sea of Sameness in your retail landscape.

Here’s an idea. Use a pre-existing sentiment you love with keywords. The one I’ve used (and edited a bit) is usually called the “Apache blessing.” (It’s not, it was written for a Hollywood movie, but it’s still pretty and meaningful. Here’s the complete text of which I’ve used the first few lines.)

Now won’t it be much more fun to say “I’ve put your dresses in RAIN, Melanie” ? You know it will be!

Know any other phrases you’d use for this idea? Can you share them in the comments?

No doors, just curtains…simply left, center or right. We keep things simple here!

I’m just starting. Moved in this weekend and will have a Grand Opening on November 2. My dressing room signs are “Bold and Beautiful” and “Large and Lovely”. My store also has consignment teaching supplies, and I do piano lessons there. so far, the response is overwhelming! Yeehaw!

How fun, Sue. I assume your shop specializes in plus sizes?

I have three dressing rooms that are decorated accordingly……Elvis, Audrey Hepburn and Barbie. Shoppers love it!!!

LOVE! Do some customers wait until their favorite icon’s room is available? I think I would… Audrey’s my gal!

I remember visiting Lauri Fitzpatrick’s store when NARTS had a Seminar in Hershey, PA… her dressing rooms had wood shutter doors and each one was painted a different color. She told the attendees how easy it was for them to refer to the “pink” or “purple” dressing room.

You’re right! It’s SO much easier to remember/refer to pink or purple rather than 1 or 2… and colors, of course, evoke nice associations, whereas numbers? They = math to me, which was never one of my favorite subjects in school!
Of such little subliminal things are successes made!

Great, I see this 2 days after I FINALLY get my signs hung on the new doors…Fitting Room 1, Fitting Room 2, Fitting Room 3! Hah…looks like I’m adding to my To Do list! What else is new?! Suppose you could use colors as well and relate them to a ‘mood’ or something! Thanks Kate! πŸ™‚

Danielle, I love the idea of decorating each room differently, too: The Rose Room, the Iris Room, the Sunflower Room… Wallpaper, poster, decals, stenciling…
