Nothing worse than a web site with cobwebs.

June 13, 2014 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Tired of having a outdated web site for your consignment, resale or thrift shop?Nothing worse than a web site with cobwebs.

You know, the pictures from the wrong season, past addresses, a notice about a sale that was last month (or year.)

And it’s a pain to design a layout that works well.

And who has time to learn how to update their web site themselves?

You CAN have an attractive, easily-update-able web site AND blog for your consignment, resale or thrift shop by using a WordPress.com FREE blog.

Read this article (and the articles it links to) and our series on web sites for consignment, resale and thrift shops here on the blog and the TGtbT.com guide to blogging.

The best part(s) of this? The time you spend creating social media on Facebook etc could be zero... because you set your blog posts to appear there automatically. So your followers can see your info on social media, in their email, in your broadcast emails, as YOU choose. And your info about your sale or event or tips for shopping… are there for you to refer back to as often as you like!

I keep telling my hubby (who’s a programmer and job hunting) to update his website, and I don’t mean just putting his stupid resume on it! It’s so outdated. I even suggested WordPress… But he won’t listen to me. grrr. It’s like, the best advice in the world. Everyone these days needs and online presence and it should be up to date. He’s so won’t be in charge of my website when I get my store. I’m learning CSS right now for that very purpose. WordPress.com is great, but WordPress.org will fit my purposes better.

Right you are, wordpress.org allows for lots of nice programming, and if that is something that you love doing, go for it! Most shopkeepers, though, have all they can handle, brain-wise, with running and polishing their shops, so I recommend wordpress.com for those folks… still plenty of flexibility, with less of a learning/ coping/ upgrading curve. (PS When you get good, let’s talk… I just am personally afraid of wp.org b/c of past experiences πŸ˜‰ )
PS Hope your hubby’s not looking for a programming job. If I were an employer and saw an outdated site, I would have doubts about his focus…

Oh, he’s looking for a programming job because that’s what he does, but HE thinks his website is just fine because he’s not looking for a job doing websites. He’s got a point there, I suppose. Data manipulation is something I’ve always loved. Now that I’m disabled and have time on my hands, I can learn stuff like coding. I’ll let you know when I’ve got a grasp of more than the basics (like I have now). πŸ™‚

Yay! I need an Internet mentor, ever since my first one fell in love and moved to Montana where they apparently don’t have Internet service!

I’ll do my best. πŸ™‚ CSS isn’t too difficult. I just have to stop being distracted by things like facebook and knitting. ^_^
