Empty Store? Pish-posh. No such thing!

May 7, 2015 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

If you’re just starting your consignment shop, or if you’ve moved your thrift (finally!) to a spacious new space, or if it’s just low-season in your resale shop, you may be feeling that there’s just not enough stuff to tempt shoppers.

You may be right.

Or you may be ready to use some of these fun ideas to make the most of the elbow room you currently have. These tricks will make your shop seem like an overflowing Ali Baba cave of sumptuous delights, even with low stock:

More space than you need, at least for now? Fill the center area with a table (tables!) and display some terrific pieces of merchandise on them:

Angle a large table in the center of the shop to use as a focal display area, suggests Kate Holmes of Too Good to be Threw

Another similar idea: At some point, this shop will probably replace those table displays with fixtures that can hold more merchandise. But notice how wisely they chose the tables: modular, so they can be used for window displays!

More walls than racks? No problem. Just angle your individual clothing racks slightly rather than line them up flat against the walls. More interest, less bargain-basement look!

TGtbT.com wants you to notice individual clothing racks are slightly angled rather than flat against the walls

Stretches of empty wall, which will some day be filled with racks and display armoires, can be inexpensively fitted out for accessories, the way this shop did:

Make an accessories bar in your temporarily-empty consignment shop, says TGtbT.com

Or perhaps this version suits your style better:

Fill a wall with a decal (or paint it yourself!) and some floating shelves, says Auntie Kate of auntiekate.wordpress.com, the blog for professional resalers

Need to leave the entire back wall of your shop blank? Try a simple Contac paper collage that looks like a shop window… even the awning can be mocked up like that!

Decorate that blank back wall in your consignment shop temporarily, says TGtbT.com

Fill an empty corner not just with a shopping-companion chair, but a wall decal and a side table with a talk-provoking artifact or two.

TGtbT.com talks about "filling up" a too-spacious consignment shop.

More empty walls to fill? A garland of cafe lights… with some sparkly earrings clothes-pinned on… will be the talk of the town until you need to add racks back there for incoming merchandise!

Cafe lights strung back-and-forth, them merchandised with earrings on cards, fills a spare wall area with delight in your consignment shop!
