Banish Burdensome Clutter

December 27, 2016 by Auntie Kate of Too Good to be Threw

Consignment shop clutter

Not only did this shop not de-clutter: they immortalized it in a photo of what was probably a very pretty dress!

While writing in my consumer-oriented journal at HowToConsign.com about how to simplify and give yourself breathing space, the thought kept nagging me:

How about the burdensome clutter in our consignment and resale shops? How much

more effective and enjoyable would our businesses

be without the stuff we stick in the corners of our stores?

Take a look at any old equipment you still have in the shop. Will you ever need it again?

How about old records? Are they necessary to keep? Is it feasible, for the records that you do need, to digitize them?

And come on, let’s be honest here. If some of your merchandise has been taking up space for X days/ months (you choose the X!) wouldn’t the business be better off without it?

And the deadliest shop clutter of all:

Visual clutter! Maybe it’s unheeded, outdated, dog-eared signage stuck here and there. Or maybe it’s mismatched hangers or fixtures which take away from the professionalism of the shop. “Decorations” that add nothing to the perceived value of your goods but simply get in the way, get dusty, get faded. Clear it out and let your stock for sale be the star!

Horray for you!!!! I worked in a resale shop where the owner would stash everything she would deal with “later” behind or on the service counter. It was a hot mess, looked very unprofessional and made my job the more difficult to do.
