An open love letter from Auntie Kate to all consignment & resale shopkeepers:
Recently, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend in social media posts, and even emails, from a variety of shops. And what’s that, you ask of me?
You’re complicating things.
I see coupons for 20% off any item or get double punches when you buy anything on the 75% off rack. I see flash sales of 25% off all yellow tags! 50% off grey tags! and 35% off anything with stripes!
By the time your viewer or shopper has figured out what you’re saying and how it relates to her wallet, she’s on to the next social media message and forgotten what you’re offering (some sort of? remind me again what your deal is?).
After all, you’re competing, in their minds, with cute cat videos or an email from their boss.
Keep it simple and sane. If you feel you must reduce the price rather than add value, do me a favor. Post something like this: Stop in today at MyShop, and we’ll meet you at the door with our $5 MyShop cash reward that you can spend on anything you like before you leave.
If you feel you have to promote something special for them to spend that $5 note on, by all means add Yes, anything from designer bags to clearance items! The 75% off rack has lots of $5 items on it… so you might just get something for just the 35¢ state tax!
Believe me, dear friends, a simple and sane message will get you
