We all know the 3 R’s of education. But I ‘d like to coin
the 4 D’s of Resale Shopkeeping.
Of course Desire, Determination, Diligence, Dollars applies tojust about everyone doing everything in this world, but it’s especially important for consignment, reale, and thrift shops.
After all, what profession involves more of the first 3 D’s… and can (or might not) lead to the fourth D, Dollars? We LOVE our businesses, we are focused on making our shops work, we work long and hard to keep up with all the tasks dealing in the marketplace of gently-used good stuff… and
some of us make a lot of money at it and some of us do not.
So what’s the difference?
Desire, wanting to have a resale shop, is admirable: you should be proud of how you’re helping your community, both folks with items to pass on and folks who want to use those items in their lives. And of course, helping Mother Earth and the local economy are all a part of your desire as well.
Determination, is something anyone who’s carving a career must have. To be able to determine the way in which your efforts make the world in general, and more specifically, to chart the course of your personal world, is a gift we sometimes don’t appreciate as much as we could.
Diligence, working hard and smart and with awareness of the possibilities, is crucial. It’s not enough to want something or to design something; it’s the effort, the hours, the brain power to spot what’s working and what isn’t that makes the difference in making
Dollars. Now some may say that dollars is the fourth ingredient in Desire, Determination, Diligence, Dollars… and that’s true: you need to invest to make your dream happen. But there’s that word: invest. Spending money to make money… that’s why you need to make those dollars, to spend your profits in a way that helps your business thrive and rewards you for all that Desire, Determination, Diligence!
Do you practice the 4D’s of resale shopkeeping?
