Kate once again, out and about, coming across some cool ideas for resale and consignment shops.

This time, it was at a shop on AMI, which Florida-beach lovers will recognize as the initials of Anna Maria Island, and a long-time store, Mister Roberts Resortwear (just the name tells you how long this shop’s been in business…)

Here’s what I snapped a pic of: their screen-door earring display.

Earring display with a twist that cuts down on theft, on the AuntieKate.wordpress.com blog

Well, yes, you’re thinking, but we’ve seen this before, Kate, so what’s the deal? The deal is: these earrings are not easily shoplifted. Look closer:

Auntie Kate shows you how these earrings won't be easily shoplifted.

See? The earring cards aren’t hung on the screening… they’re attached via Swiftach loops to a wire, so snatch-and-grabbers will go home, thankfully, empty-pocketed.

Thanks to Mister Roberts Resortwear for allowing me to share this idea with you. If you’re on AMI, their address is 5330 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach FL (no, they didn’t name he town after Auntie Kate LOL)

Kate helps consignment, resale, and thrift shops succeed

No, Kate’s not a Galactic Roller Derby Queen. Alas.

There’s 2 things that consignment, resale, and thrift shopkeepers know about me (just in case you don’t know me, click here)

One, I insist price tags with printed markdowns are detrimental to your long-range business profit

and Two, I always warn that across-the-board shop-wide markdowns are quite iffy.

But there’s one thing that you may not associate with me, and that’s that

I  want even those who ignore my advice to succeed. Yes, you there, with the price tags with printed markdowns, this idea is specifically for you:

I know, sometimes A: Your shop is simply TOO FULL; B: You might need to goose shoppers to get them buying; and C: It might be fun to reward your shoppers with an unexpected savings event. Therefore, I wanted to share this idea from a consignment peer.

If you need a markdown gimmick, try Take the Next Markdown on the tickets.

Use it as a same-day, one-day incentive on your social media, or announce it late Friday evening for the weekend. Another way to use this idea? As a coupon/ reward voucher “good for the Next Markdown on the ticket, limit 4 items”. *

Would this work for you? It would? You mean you’re actually listening to Auntie Kate for a change? Cooool.

*Why that “limit 4 items”? You’d be amazed how many folks will actually BUY 4 items when they get a voucher/ coupon like that… and if it didn’t say that, they’d stop at one.

Facebook cover photos can immediately “place” your shop in viewers’ minds if they’ve already visited or even just noticed your shop in real life.

Or they can set the mood for what the shop might be like.

Kudos to two consignment shops and their Facebook cover photos. First, Sei Bella‘s dramatic photo of their store front in the dusk… which makes the shop look like a warm beacon in the night.

Bonus points for their having added the shop’s address to the photo as though it was part of the backlit sign!

And kudos on the other shore of the continent, to Chic to Chic.

Good consignment shop Facebook cover, says AuntieKate.wordpress.com

With the owner in her leather jacket, the pup, and the two staffers in soft pastel clothing, plus the motorcycles in front of their traditional pretty storefront, this photo makes a statement about how chic Chic to Chic actually is!

And just to balance out the two wonderful examples, an OOPS Facebook cover photo. I trust you can see the takeaway a casual observer would receive from this otherwise nice photo!

Take a fresh look at your resale, consignment, or thrift shop’s Facebook cover. Could it be improved on?

(Apologies to email subscribers. This post went out before I finished it! Here’s “the rest of the story.”)

While it’s all well and good to have lots and lots of “likes” on your Facebook business page,

the actual GOAL is to have these folks SEE your posts, right?

I’ve talked before about reminding your followers often (once a week? once a month?) to choose to get notifications, but The White Elephant adds another way to get the point across. They’re pinned a message to the top of their timeline page.

Choose to "get notifications"

Pinning like this is great, but it doesn’t substitute for reminding followers over and over again. That’s because your current followers seldom actually end up on your main page. I think I read a statistic that less than 40% of visits to your page actually see your cover photo and pinned post…

Do you use “notifications” when you go onto Facebook? If not, this is what it looks like:

Facebook notification count

Visit The White Elephant on Facebook. And while you’re thinking of it, choose “get notifications” on Too Good to be Threw’s Facebook, too.  Note: if you already “like” a business page, you’ll get a slightly different popup box when you run your mouse across the word “liked”… choose all notifications, or the pencil icon to edit which types of posts you want to be notified of.

Kudos to this shop for thinking about a way to convert those Facebook “Likes” into shoppers in their store.

Kudos to Tags Consignment, Oakdale CA

They created this graphic to announce a traffic-building simple promotion for their shop, then put it on the shop’s Facebook page. On a Monday morning, so fans could talk their work-mates to coming with them…  Here’s the text:

Schedule your Sale.. so easy!
Call your Friends … it is time for you to have a sale on [a] day that is right for you! All counts include you:
3-4 friends 30% off
5-8 friends 40% off
9 + friends 50% off
Call TAGS to tell us your day..Same day is ok! Woot!
Easy and Fun!!

Tags, owned by Tanya in Oakdale CA, is motivating their Facebook fans to gather up a car- (or a bus-)ful of their friends to mob-shop. Notice that this is not an after-hours shopping party, doesn’t involve prior planning, invitations, refreshments or added staff hours. Just Find as many friends as you can to bring and earn a nice, fat discount on whatever you buy!

Additional kudos to Tanya for planning this month-of-June promotional boost: She announced that it was upcoming, starting in mid May, and pinned it at the top of the shop’s Facebook page.

Great idea, isn’t it? Could you use this idea in your shop?

(Tip: To pin a post on FB, see here. You can also pin in a group; you can’t on a personal page. Enjoy!)

Update: To find Tags on line, search for them in Facebook. Their web site is on hiatus.
