It’s Spring Break time in my part of the world, and visitors with money to spend and time to shop are flooding in.

Why doesn't every business have a photo op area?

Consignment shopkeepers Becky and her sister, Kate Buck, make a photo op out of their mid-morning cupcake treat.

Maybe your area doesn’t get Spring Break action, but it probably does get an influx of out-of-towners some time during the year. A local festival, leaf-peeping, seasonal activities?

The best thing about visitors is that they are in a good mood and that they spend money.

To sell more, you have to sell to more customers, more stuff, more often.

This is more true in resale/ thrift/ consignment retail than it is in “regular” retail, since we’re the ones with the signs that say Buy It Today/ It Won’t Be Here Tomorrow. After all, we’re a “new store every day” and “she who shops often, snags the best stuff!”

Has your consignment or resale shop grown like Topsy?One thing I noticed on my trip to 5 eclectic shops the other day, was the extent to which

fixturing matters.

The two very-funky shops had, on purpose, mismatched fixturing. This gave a nice cluttery feel to their shops, and since all the fixtures, from clothes trees to tables, were for-sale merchandise, it made sense.
