Take a ghastly, icky, no-way-Jose sweater. Please.

You know that ghastly sweater on your consignment or resale shop’s clearance rack? Those $1 sweaters on the thrift shop’s racks?

Turn them into something wonderful. This scarf made from reclaimed sweater sleeves got me started. Once I got started I couldn’t stop.

What a terrific project if you’re going to Grandma’s over the Thanksgiving weekend. Who knows, maybe if you got Mom and Aunt Ruth started on some of these ideas, you’d find something under the Christmas tree you really WANT, instead of another ghastly sweater.

Do’s and don’ts of the consignment and resale holiday shopping experience

Shopping’s supposed to be fun, right? Especially for the holidays, and even more especially, in resale, thrift, and consignment shops. Make sure that your customers get a full dose of holiday cheer, and that you present yourself as a new and exciting place to find Christmas gifts, holiday decorating and entertaining props, attire and toys and stocking stuffers….

Sure, you have trifle bowls and little black dresses and made-locally toys and accessories. Now, your job is to help shoppers envision these in their lives. Make your merchandise shout festivity: Fill the trifle bowl with oranges and pine clippings, match the LBD on that dress form with red pumps and a brilliant blue clutch (this season’s look) and tie a flamboyant bow on the rocking horse. DO set the stage for your merchandise to fit into their vision of their holiday.

Open back shelving, a few luxe pieces of clothing and a lot of neatly-wrapped gift boxes. Add bare branches and red berry garland, and you have an exclusive, boutique look for your holiday windows. Bonus: takes 3 minutes to switch out merchandise!
