Consignment & resale promotional ideas are EVERYwhere!

If you’ve been following me on Facebook the last couple of days, you know my town is in the midst of a giant charity-donation vent, the Giving Challenge. And the creativity is flowing from Main Street to the Gulf of Mexico… ideas that could be tweaked just a bit and become
terrific inventive promo events for YOUR shop.
For example: did you know that the dogs that are least likely to be adopted from shelters are black? One of our shelters here in Sarasota is having a Blackout Event to show folks how adoptable these canines are.
That got me thinking.
Many shelters have the ability to come to your place of business with potential fur buddies; check whether yours do. Pick a date and get started helping match up customers and canines!
What could your promotion’s name and theme be? If your shop sells furniture and home furnishings, you could use the catchphrase Adoption is the new black and feature, oh maybe leather couches that don’t show dog hair on the cushions?
If you sell kidswear in your consignment shop, how about Dogs that don’t show handprints… only lots of love? You could have a make it/ take it event for kids involving cutting hands out of paper and gluing on hearts…
But I think the promotion that will elicit the most smiles… and maybe even a spot on the evening news… is They go so well with your outfit: Chic Black Companions. Do a photo shoot (find a photographer that will donate her/his services!) of models wearing black outfits from your place with black dogs, and offer a free chic dog collar or leash for every adopted dog.

No, it’s not the dead of January or those slooww days in July. The scariest season of all is
Halloween.
Why? Because people love it…. more and more each year. Because you have like THREE WEEKS or so to make or break (more…)
Is it time to fire that employee?

Fretting over whether the wisest course of action would be to keep working with… or dismiss… a new employee?
As you may know, all my employees were hired on a trial basis, where (as I put it)
We’re trying each other on for size. You get to see if you like the job, the people, the duties… even me. And I get to do the same: observe how you work, how you interact with staff and customers, and whether you can and will accomplish a variety of tasks. If either of us decide this wasn’t a good choice, we can back out, no hard feelings, during this time period.
Now, it seems I was employing a Best Practice! Yup, pun intended.
As Bob Phipps says here:
I’m often asked what is one of the best practices from successful retailers. It’s simple. They get rid of the bad employees sooner. Termination is just part of the retail hiring process.
Read his message.

not much summer left since you clearanced it, and not enough fall in yet to make the shop look wonderful.
It’s enough to make your shop seem empty and your merchandise a bit lost and forlorn. But we have some simple solutions you can accomplish (more…)
