The greatest gift one can receive, I think, is to feel that one has made a difference.
That’s the birthday present I give myself today, and the one I wish for you every day.
At the NARTS 2010 C0nference a few weeks ago, I was honored to be asked to present a workshop on success.
Of course, doing a workshop for such diversified shopkeepers as those who attend Conference means thinking about what the very word “success” means to each of us. My point was that no one gets to choose what defines your success in finite terms but you: how you work, what your produce, when and where and how hard, and where “work” fits into your definition of “life.”
I ended my talk, though, with an Emerson quote, which speaks, I am sure, to the ultimate definition of success.
Which I’ve turned into a PDF file for you, if you’d like to print it out and tack it up. For your birthday, on my birthday, I hope that you will be able to reflect upon a successful life. Here’s the poster: Success: defined by Ralph Waldo Emerson

God Bless the day Auntie Kate was born…and the day we found her manual! Without it, where would we all be??
Happy Birthday Kate! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Happy birthday Kate! Thanks for the gift, one of my favourite quotes but I hadn’t read it in a long time. And thanks for helping me achieve my goal of supporting my family and keeping my kids out of daycare.

Happy Birthday! Always enjoy reading your blogs of ‘how it used to be!’ You do well creating a picture with your writing.
Good lands, Mrs. Wig, when I was 29 my one-year-old consignment shop still carried hot pants and midi dresses, Hukapoo blouses and Shetland sweaters…wrap skirts and paperback novels for 50 cents.
Garanimals were best-sellers in my kids’ dept and layaways were stored in the bathroom. I think I had just graduated from scraps of paper pinned on the left shoulder of clothes to real strung tags, attached with an open-eyed needle.
Happy Blessed Birthday Auntie Kate…may you enjoy “29” for as long as you want….thanks for the gift of you every day to us!
